Quick answer
The Derry to Tewksbury drop-off is about 25 miles from the Derry Municipal Center, typically 35 to 40 minutes without traffic: Route 102 west to I-93 Exit 4, I-93 south about 17 miles into Massachusetts, I-495 south toward Lowell, then Route 133 and North Street to 1215 Main Street. New Hampshire Document Shredding takes walk-in drop-off shredding weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 99 cents a pound, or $20 per banker’s box at ten or more. The $34.90 per-job fees apply once per visit, so ten boxes in one trip cost $234.90, while the same ten split over two trips cost $366.80.
The Derry to Tewksbury drop-off route, turn by turn
Your Derry to Tewksbury drop-off is almost all interstate. From the Derry Municipal Center at 14 Manning Street, you are about two miles from I-93, and once you are on it you stay on it for about 17 miles. The whole run is about 25 miles to our office at 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, in Tewksbury, Massachusetts.
This page is only about that drive and how to make the most of it. For every option Derry homes and offices have, pickup and witnessed sessions included, see our main page on the shredding service Derry NH residents and businesses use.
- Route 102 west to Exit 4. From the village, follow Route 102 west toward Londonderry. The Exit 4 ramps for I-93 come up in about two miles.
- I-93 south toward Boston. Take the southbound ramp, signed for Salem and Boston. Stay on through Windham and Salem and across the state line into Methuen and Andover, about 17 miles of highway.
- I-495 south toward Lowell. At the big interchange in Andover, bear right for I-495 south, signed for Lowell. You are on it for only about two miles, so get to the right lane early.
- Exit at Route 133 for Tewksbury. The ramp is signed for Route 133, Tewksbury and Andover. Follow the short connector to North Street and turn left.
- North Street to Main Street. Stay on North Street for about 2.3 miles until it ends at Main Street (Route 38). Turn left. Our building at 1215 is just down the road, with free parking out front.
If you start on the east side of Derry, there is one more option. NHDOT’s I-93 Exit 4A project, about a mile north of Exit 4, built a new interchange and the Old Rum Trail connector toward Folsom Road. Its project site says that part was completed in July 2025, while work on Folsom Road, Route 28 and side roads is expected to run until June 2028. Expect cones on that side of town for a while.
The way home can be even simpler. From our lot, take Main Street a short way to Chandler Street, then East Street, which becomes Dascomb Road at the Andover line. That brings you straight to an I-93 north ramp signed for Lawrence and Concord, New Hampshire. From there it is about 20 miles of interstate back to Exit 4 and Route 102 east into Derry. The whole return is about 25 miles as well.
A word on GPS. Phone apps sometimes suggest Route 28 through Windham and Salem when I-93 is slow. That road has lights, plazas and turning traffic, and it rarely saves time with a heavy car. If your app reroutes you, check the arrival time before you follow it. For most Derry drivers, the interstate is the plan.
How long the drive takes, and when to leave Derry
Without traffic, most of our Derry customers make the run in 35 to 40 minutes. The trip is long enough that the clock matters, and our clock is fixed. We take walk-ins Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We are closed on weekends, so a Derry to Tewksbury drop-off is always a weekday errand.
I-93 through Salem and the I-495 interchange in Andover both slow down in the weekday commute. We won’t pretend to predict traffic on a given day, but the safest plan is to drive between the rushes. Our opening time of 10 a.m. already pushes you into the quieter late morning.
| Leave Derry around | Arrive around (no traffic) | How it works out |
|---|---|---|
| 9:20 a.m. | 10:00 a.m. | Right at opening. Good if you want the rest of the day back |
| 11:00 a.m. | 11:40 a.m. | Our pick. Morning commute is over, plenty of time to unload |
| 1:00 p.m. | 1:40 p.m. | Easy midday run, pairs with lunch or an errand on Route 38 |
| 3:45 p.m. | 4:25 p.m. | Tight. Leave room for afternoon traffic and the weigh-in before 5 |
| After 4:15 p.m. | Too late | Come back another day, or book a pickup |
Arrival times assume the 35 to 40 minute no-traffic drive. Add time for weather and the afternoon commute. For a big load, give yourself ten or fifteen minutes at the counter as well.
Plenty of Derry people already drive I-93 into Massachusetts for work. If that is you, the boxes can ride in the trunk and come in on a late morning, a long lunch or a day off. A 7 a.m. commute won’t line up with a 10 a.m. counter, so plan on a mid-day stop rather than a pre-work one.
Winter is the other variable. Paper and wet snow don’t mix, and a soggy cardboard box tears when you lift it. If a storm is coming, wait a day. If you have to drive in wet weather, line the trunk with a tarp or put the boxes in large trash bags and tie them shut. We shred damp paper, but dry boxes are easier on everybody’s back.
Holiday weeks can throw off any plan. If you are driving down around a holiday, call (978) 636-0301 before you leave Derry and we will tell you whether the counter is open that day. A two-minute call beats a 50-mile round trip to a locked door.
Plan a single Derry to Tewksbury drop-off trip
Here is the one number that should shape your plan. Every job, however small, carries $34.90 in per-job fees: $14.95 for the HIPAA filing that produces your Certificate of Destruction and $19.95 for recycling the shred. Two trips mean two sets of fees. So does a second visit to drop off the bag you forgot.
The box rate pushes the same way. Under ten boxes we charge 99 cents a pound. At ten or more, a large banker’s box is a flat $20 and a small box is $15. A banker’s box of paper weighs about 30 pounds, so ten of them by the pound would be $297, but at the box rate they are $200. Splitting ten boxes into two trips of five loses the box rate and doubles the fees.
Look at the ten-box group. One trip costs $234.90. Two trips of five cost $366.80, which is $131.90 more for the same paper, before you count a second 50-mile round trip. Five small trips of two boxes each would reach $471.50, about double the single trip.
The twenty-box group tells a softer story. Two trips of ten keep the box rate, so the only extra cost is a second $34.90. Four trips of five lose the box rate and add three sets of fees, for $733.60. The lesson for Derry is the same either way: gather everything first, then drive once.
Counter tip: if you can fit nine boxes in the car, find a tenth. Nine banker’s boxes by weight come to about $302.20 with fees. Ten at the flat rate come to $234.90. The extra box saves you about $67 and clears one more shelf.
- Walk the house once. Check the basement, attic, desk drawers and the closet where old tax years live. Write down a rough box count before you buy or borrow boxes.
- Check retention before you pack. The IRS says most tax records need 3 years from filing, 6 years if you left out income over 25 percent of gross, and 7 years for worthless securities or bad debt claims.
- Fill boxes to a weight you can carry. About 30 pounds per banker’s box is plenty. Close the lids so nothing shifts on the highway.
- Aim for ten if you are close. At ten boxes the flat $20 rate applies, so the last box often pays for itself.
- Bag the electronics separately. Old phones, drives and USB sticks are quoted per item. Keep them out of the paper boxes.
- Load the night before. Put everything in the car, then check the house one more time for the stray folder.
Here is a worked example from a typical Derry cleanout. Say a family finds fourteen banker’s boxes across the house. Brought down together, that is fourteen boxes at $20, or $280, plus $34.90, for $314.90. If they split it into two runs of seven, each run weighs about 210 pounds and costs $207.90 plus $34.90, so $242.80 a trip and $485.60 for both. That is $170.70 more, plus a second 50-mile round trip on I-93.
What if it really won’t fit? Ask a relative with a pickup or a minivan, or fold the back seats down and take the passengers out of the plan. Banker’s boxes stack well when the lids are on. And if the honest answer is two full SUVs, that is often the moment a pickup becomes the better deal, which we cover further down this page.
The numbers that decide one trip from Derry
These figures don’t change with the size of your car or the day you drive. Plan around them and the single trip takes care of itself.
Paper boxes
Banker’s boxes, file boxes, copy-paper boxes. Staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands and file folders can all stay in.
Bags and loose paper
Grocery bags of mail and loose statements are fine. They go on the scale with everything else and are billed at 99 cents a pound.
The media bag
Hard drives, phones, discs and USB sticks go in a separate bag. We physically destroy them and quote them per item at the counter.
Take out the metal rings from three-ring binders, the frames from hanging folders, and anything that is not paper. That is the whole prep list. Our document prep guide has the details if you want them.
Small Derry offices can use the same one-trip habit. Instead of a run every few weeks, keep a closed box in the back room and fill it until you have a car load. A quarterly trip with ten boxes pays the per-job fees four times a year. A monthly trip with three boxes pays them twelve times, and never reaches the box rate.
Whoever drives should know what is in the boxes. If the load includes client or patient files, bring the booking or job reference your office uses, and file the certificate when it arrives. That way the front desk can answer the question an auditor tends to ask, which is when these records left and where they went.
What happens when you pull in at 1215 Main Street
Our office sits on Route 38, Main Street, in Tewksbury. Parking is free, right by the door. If the car is full, come inside first and tell us. A staff member will help you unload onto a cart, so you don’t have to carry ten boxes across the lot.
The boxes go on the scale at the counter. You see the weight, we work out the bill with you, and you pay. Under ten boxes it is 99 cents a pound. At ten or more we count boxes at the flat rate. The $34.90 per-job fees go on once.
Your paper is shredded the same business day at this office. It is cross-cut, baled and sent for recycling, and you get a Certificate of Destruction for the job. You are back on Route 38 heading for I-495 in a few minutes.
- No appointment for walk-in drop-off, Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Weighed in front of you, paid at the counter
- Shredded the same business day at our Tewksbury office
- A Certificate of Destruction on every job, included in the $14.95 HIPAA filing fee
- All shredded paper recycled
Want more on what the certificate shows and why you should keep it? Read our page on the certificate of destruction. For households, it is a record of what left the house. For a Derry office, it belongs in the compliance file.
What Derry’s transfer station takes, and why your files should skip it
The Derry Transfer Station is at 43 Transfer Lane, off Fordway. The town’s page lists hours of Tuesday to Saturday, 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with the gate locking at 3:30, and it is closed every Sunday and Monday. Recycling there is mandatory, and household trash is accepted only from Derry residents.
That is a good system for bottles, cans and cardboard. It is not built for paperwork with your Social Security number on it. Recycled paper is handled as ordinary paper, in the open, by people who have no reason to treat it as confidential. When we checked the town’s 2026 transfer station events page in November 2026, it listed holiday hours and no shred day.
| Derry Transfer Station | Our Tewksbury counter | |
|---|---|---|
| Days | Tuesday to Saturday | Monday to Friday |
| Hours | 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. | 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. |
| Who can use it | Derry residents for household trash | Anyone, households and businesses |
| Confidential paper | Not a secure option | Cross-cut shredded, then recycled |
| Proof | None for paper | Certificate of Destruction on every job |
One practical note. Both places are open Tuesday to Friday, so a Derry household can do the dump run and the shredding run in the same week without a clash. Just don’t plan a Saturday for the shredding, because our counter is closed that day.
Derry’s ZIP is 03038. For a pickup instead of a drive, the transportation zone for your Derry address is confirmed when you book.
When the drive from Derry isn’t worth it
The drop-off is the cheapest way to shred, but it is not always the right one. Three situations change the answer.
Too many boxes, too few hands
An office cleanout or a full house is a lot of lifting. Book a pickup and we load the boxes and bring them back to Tewksbury for shredding. See how off-site shredding works.
You need to watch
Some legal or clinical files call for a witness. A witnessed session at our office costs $1.99 a pound with a $100 minimum, plus the $34.90 fees, and the certificate is signed in front of you.
A business with a schedule
Derry offices on Route 102 and Route 28 often prefer a booked pickup to sending staff down I-93. Our page on Derry NH business shredding covers that side.
Pickup adds a transportation fee on top of the same shredding rates. Our three zones are $129.95, $159.95 and $199.95, and the zone for your Derry address is confirmed when you book. Pickup needs an appointment, and the price assumes ground-level or elevator access. Stairs or tight access carry a handling fee we quote up front.
| Your Derry job | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 5 boxes | Drive | $64.60 for one box, $183.40 for five, all in |
| 6 to 9 boxes | Drive, and round up to 10 | Ten at $20 a box beats nine by the pound |
| 10 to 20 boxes, a car and a helper | Drive, in one trip | $234.90 for ten, $434.90 for twenty |
| A full house or office, no one to lift | Pickup | Zone fee confirmed when you book |
| Files you must see destroyed | Witnessed | $1.99 per pound, $100 minimum |
For households, the drive almost always wins, and our page on Derry NH home shredding covers what to shred and what it costs per box. If you want the full side-by-side, read our drop-off vs off-site comparison. Neighbors one exit over follow the same road, and our Londonderry NH home shredding page covers their version of the trip. Salem drivers, ten minutes closer, have their own Salem NH to Tewksbury drop-off guide. Every town we serve is listed on our service areas page.
Old computers are worth a separate thought. A laptop or desktop from a Derry home office can hold years of scanned statements. Bag drives and phones apart from the paper, and see our hard drive destruction page before you bring them down.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the Derry to Tewksbury drop-off drive?
From the Derry Municipal Center it is about 25 miles and typically 35 to 40 minutes without traffic. Take Route 102 west to I-93 Exit 4, I-93 south about 17 miles, I-495 south toward Lowell for about two miles, then the Route 133 exit, North Street and a left on Main Street to number 1215.
Do I need an appointment to drop off in Tewksbury?
No. Walk-in drop-off runs Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with no appointment. We weigh your boxes at the counter and shred them the same business day. Witnessed sessions and pickups do need an appointment, and those can be arranged outside regular hours.
Why does one trip cost less than two?
Every job carries $34.90 in per-job fees, so each visit pays them again. Ten banker’s boxes in one trip cost $234.90 because the $20 box rate applies. Split into two trips of five, each trip is priced by the pound and pays its own fees, for about $366.80 in total.
Is there a drop-off location in Derry?
No. We shred only at our office at 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, Tewksbury, MA. We have no office, kiosk or drop box in Derry or anywhere in New Hampshire. Derry customers either drive down, which is about 25 miles, or book a pickup with the zone confirmed when they book.
When is the best time to leave Derry?
Late morning or early afternoon on a weekday. We open at 10 a.m., so leaving Derry around 11 puts you past the morning commute with plenty of time to unload. Leave a cushion if you go late in the day, because the weigh-in has to happen before we close at 5 p.m.
Can I use Exit 4A from Derry?
NHDOT’s Exit 4A project site says the new interchange about a mile north of Exit 4, with the Old Rum Trail connector toward Folsom Road, was completed in July 2025. Work on Folsom Road and Route 28 is expected to continue until June 2028. From the village, Route 102 to Exit 4 is still the simple choice.
What should I take out of the boxes?
Only a few things. Remove three-ring binder hardware, the metal frames from hanging folders and anything that is not paper. Staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands and file folders can stay. Put hard drives, phones and discs in a separate bag, and we quote them per item.
Can I bring Derry paper to the transfer station instead?
The Derry Transfer Station takes recycling and household trash from Derry residents, Tuesday to Saturday. It is not a secure option for confidential paper and gives you no proof of destruction. When we checked its 2026 events page in November 2026, no shred day was listed. Shred the sensitive paper and recycle the rest.
