Drop-off vs off-site shredding: which one costs you less
This is the side-by-side comparison of drop-off, pickup and witnessed shredding for New Hampshire homes and offices, with the real prices and the break-even math by volume and zone. By the end you will know whether to load the car or book the driver.
99¢ per pound at our Tewksbury drop-off. Pickup adds a zone fee from $129.95. Certificate of Destruction on every job.
- 99¢ per pound
- $129.95 Zone 1 pickup

Quick answer
At New Hampshire Document Shredding, drop-off and off-site pickup use the same shredding price, 99 cents a pound or $20 per large box at 10 or more boxes, plus $34.90 in per-job fees. The only difference in cost is the pickup transportation fee: $129.95 in Zone 1, $159.95 in Zone 2 and $199.95 in Zone 3. If one car trip to Tewksbury costs you less than that fee in mileage and time, drop off. If the job takes several trips, heavy lifting or staff you cannot spare, book the pickup.
Drop-off vs off-site shredding, side by side
Every job we take ends in the same room. Your paper goes through a cross-cut shredder at our office at 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, and the shred is baled and recycled. What changes from one service to the next is who carries the boxes, whether you need an appointment, and whether you stand there and watch. Our main document shredding page has the overview. This page is the head-to-head.
People often assume pickup costs more per pound. It does not. The shredding rate is identical. You pay one extra line, the transportation fee for your zone, and that single number is what the whole decision turns on.
| Drop-off | Off-site pickup | Witnessed | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who moves the boxes | You drive them to Tewksbury | Our driver collects them from you | You drive them to Tewksbury |
| Appointment | No, walk in Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Yes | Yes |
| Shredding price | 99¢ per pound, or $15 small and $20 large box at 10+ boxes | Same as drop-off | $1.99 per pound, $100 minimum |
| Transportation fee | None | Zone 1 $129.95, Zone 2 $159.95, Zone 3 $199.95 | None |
| Per-job fees | $34.90 | $34.90 | $34.90 |
| Access rule | Free parking, staff help you unload | Price assumes ground level or elevator. Stairs or restricted access add a handling fee, quoted up front | Free parking, staff help you unload |
| When it is shredded | Same business day | After the boxes arrive at the office | While you watch |
| Certificate of Destruction | Included | Included | Included, signed in front of you |
| 3 boxes (about 90 lb), total | $124.00 | $253.95 in Zone 1 | $214.00 |
The table shows something worth saying plainly. For a few boxes, drop-off is far cheaper than anything else, and a witnessed session can even come in under a pickup. Pickup earns its fee when the volume grows, when the building has nobody free to drive, or when the boxes are too heavy for the people who have to lift them.
How each service works for a New Hampshire customer
Our office sits on Route 38, Main Street in Tewksbury, near the I-495 interchange. From the state line at Salem or Pelham it is about 15 minutes by I-93 or Route 38. There is no New Hampshire storefront, no drop box and no truck that shreds at the curb. That geography is why this comparison matters so much to our customers north of the line.
With drop-off shredding, you walk in on a weekday, staff help you unload, the boxes go on a scale in front of you and you pay at the counter. The paper is shredded that same business day.
With off-site shredding, you book a pickup, we confirm your zone, and a driver collects sealed boxes from your home or office. The boxes ride to Tewksbury and are shredded there after they arrive. Nothing is shredded in your parking lot.
Witnessed shredding is the third option. You book a time, drive down, and watch every box go into the shredder. It costs $1.99 a pound instead of 99 cents, so it suits a small set of files that someone must see destroyed.
Drop-off fits
Households with a closet of old statements, home offices after tax season, and small offices within easy reach of I-93 or Route 3. One person, one car, one trip. If you can lift the boxes and fit them in the trunk, this is the cheapest way to shred.
Pickup fits
Offices with twenty or more boxes, practices that cannot send a staff member away for a morning, buildings with a loading dock or elevator, and older customers who should not be carrying 30-pound boxes. Also anyone farther north, where the drive eats half a day.
Witnessed fits
Closed legal files, personnel files, records released from a legal hold, and an executor who wants to see a parent’s papers destroyed. Bring only the boxes that need a witness and send the rest through drop-off or pickup at the lower rate.
What each option costs by volume and zone
Here are the totals for 1, 5, 10 and 20 boxes, assuming full large banker’s boxes at about 30 pounds each. Every figure includes the $34.90 per-job fees, which are a $14.95 HIPAA filing fee for the Certificate of Destruction paperwork and a $19.95 environmental fee for recycling the shred.
| Volume | Drop-off | Pickup Zone 1 | Pickup Zone 2 | Pickup Zone 3 | Witnessed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 box (30 lb) | $64.60 | $194.55 | $224.55 | $264.55 | $134.90 |
| 5 boxes (150 lb) | $183.40 | $313.35 | $343.35 | $383.35 | $333.40 |
| 10 boxes (box rate) | $234.90 | $364.85 | $394.85 | $434.85 | $631.90 |
| 20 boxes (box rate) | $434.90 | $564.85 | $594.85 | $634.85 | $1,228.90 |
| 40 boxes (box rate) | $834.90 | $964.85 | $994.85 | $1,034.85 | $2,422.90 |
Read across any row and the pickup columns sit a fixed distance above drop-off: $129.95, $159.95 or $199.95. That gap never grows with volume. At one box, the zone fee triples the bill. At forty boxes, it adds about 16 percent in Zone 1. The more you shred, the smaller the pickup premium looks.
Witnessed works the other way. Its premium is per pound, so it is modest on a single box and large on a room full of files. Twenty boxes witnessed cost almost three times the drop-off price.
Notice the jump between 9 and 10 boxes. Under 10 boxes you pay by the pound, so nine full banker’s boxes at about 270 pounds come to $267.30 plus fees. At 10 or more boxes the flat $20 large-box rate applies, and ten boxes come to $200 plus fees. If you are sitting on eight or nine full boxes, finish the purge and bring ten.
Weights are estimates until the scale says otherwise. A full banker’s box of paper runs about 30 pounds, but boxes of thin onionskin or glossy magazines vary. The full price list, including small-box rates, sits on our shredding rates page.
Break-even: when pickup beats driving it down yourself
Since the shredding price is the same either way, the real question is simple. Does the drive cost you more than the zone fee? A car trip has two costs. One is the vehicle itself, which the IRS prices at 76 cents a mile for business use from July 1 to December 31, 2026. That rate covers gas, wear and the rest of owning the car, not just fuel. The other cost is your time, or your employee’s time, from loading the trunk to getting back to your desk.
The table below uses rough round trips from a few southern New Hampshire starting points. Check your own map, since your street and the traffic on I-93 will change the numbers. The last column is the break-even value of an hour. If your time is worth less than that, drive. If it is worth more, the pickup pays for itself.
| Starting point (zone) | Rough round trip | Mileage at 76¢ | Time door to door | Zone fee | Break-even value of your hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Salem, Pelham or Windham (Zone 1) | 30 miles | $22.80 | About 1 hour | $129.95 | $107.15 |
| Nashua (Zone 2) | 40 miles | $30.40 | About 1 hour 15 minutes | $159.95 | $103.64 |
| Manchester (Zone 2) | 70 miles | $53.20 | About 1 hour 45 minutes | $159.95 | $61.00 |
| Portsmouth (Zone 3) | 100 miles | $76.00 | About 2 hours 15 minutes | $199.95 | $55.09 |
The math works like this. Take the zone fee, subtract the mileage, and divide by the hours. A Salem homeowner saves about $107 by driving instead of booking a pickup, which is a good return on an hour. A Portsmouth office manager saves only about $55 for more than two hours on I-95 and I-495. If that person bills or earns more than $55 an hour, pickup is the cheaper choice even before anyone lifts a box.
The single-trip math assumes everything fits in one car. That is where most offices go wrong. Say your car holds ten banker’s boxes with the back seat folded. A Manchester office with forty boxes needs four trips, which is 280 miles and about seven hours. At 76 cents a mile that is $212.80 in vehicle cost alone, before anyone’s wages, against one $159.95 pickup. For forty boxes, book the pickup.
For three boxes from Pelham, drive. For thirty from an office in Nashua, book. Between those two, run your own numbers with the table above, and do not forget that the person driving is not doing their regular job that morning. Our guide to shredding pickup zones in NH lists which towns fall in each zone, and the zone is confirmed when you book.
Decision table: drop-off, pickup or witnessed
Most customers can decide in under a minute with three questions. Does someone need to watch? How many boxes is it? Who is going to carry them? The table puts the common situations in one place, and the diagram below it is the same logic as a flow.
| Your situation | Our recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 5 boxes of household paper, near the border | Drop-off | Under $185 all in, one short trip, shredded the same business day |
| 6 to 15 boxes, someone free to drive, one car load | Drop-off | The zone fee costs more than the trip unless you live far north |
| Ten boxes or more that need two or more car loads | Pickup | Repeat trips cost more than one zone fee |
| Office where nobody can leave for half a day | Pickup | Staff time is the hidden cost of drop-off |
| Older homeowner or anyone who should not lift 30-pound boxes | Pickup | The driver handles the lifting. Mention stairs when you book |
| Seacoast or Monadnock location, moderate volume | Pickup, or one planned trip | The drive is long enough that the Zone 3 fee often wins |
| Closed legal matters, personnel files, released legal holds | Witnessed | Someone with authority sees it destroyed and gets the certificate in hand |
| Mixed load: a few sensitive files plus many routine boxes | Split it | Witness the few, send the rest through drop-off or pickup at 99¢ |
Security: how the chain of custody differs
All three services destroy the paper the same way, with cross-cut shredding at the Tewksbury office and 100 percent of the shred recycled. The difference is the path a box takes before it reaches the shredder, and how many hands touch it on the way.
At drop-off, you are the chain of custody until the counter. The boxes ride in your car, you carry them in with our staff, and they are weighed in front of you. After that they sit in our locked handling area until they are shredded the same business day. The handoff happens in one room, in person, and you leave with the paperwork.
Pickup adds a leg. The driver collects sealed boxes at your door, they travel to Tewksbury, and they are shredded after they arrive. Your box count is the record that ties your door to our certificate, so count before the driver arrives and keep that number.
Witnessed shredding shortens the chain to nothing. The boxes never leave your sight from the scale to the shredder, and the certificate is signed while you stand there. That is why it suits the files where someone must be able to say “I saw it.”
For federal rules, none of this changes the outcome. The FTC Disposal Rule at 16 CFR Part 682 accepts burning, pulverizing or shredding consumer report information, and it accepts hiring a document destruction contractor after due diligence. Our page on chain of custody shredding walks through every handoff in detail.
- Seal and count. Tape every box shut and write the total on your copy of the booking. For an office, note which department each box came from.
- Hand over. At drop-off you carry the boxes to the counter. On a pickup the driver loads the sealed boxes and confirms the count with you before leaving.
- Transport. Drop-off boxes travel in your car. Pickup boxes travel in our vehicle straight to the Tewksbury office.
- Weigh and log. The load is weighed so the price matches the paper. Drop-off customers see the scale in person.
- Shred and recycle. The paper goes through a cross-cut shredder at the office and the shred is recycled.
- Certificate. You receive a Certificate of Destruction for the job. File it with your retention log or closing memo.
Certificates: what you get with drop-off vs off-site shredding
Every job comes with a Certificate of Destruction at no extra charge beyond the $14.95 HIPAA filing fee that is part of the per-job fees. The service you choose changes when and how you get it, not whether you get it.
Drop-off certificate
Issued for the material you handed over at the counter that day. Because you saw the weight on the scale, the numbers on your receipt and the paper you brought in match up without any guesswork.
Pickup certificate
Issued after the boxes reach Tewksbury and are shredded. Compare it with the box count you wrote down at pickup. If you run a regulated office, keep the booking confirmation, your count and the certificate together.
Witnessed certificate
Filled in and signed in front of you once the last box is gone. This is the version legal and HR teams prefer when an internal policy asks for proof that a named person saw the destruction.
A certificate is only as useful as your filing. Keep it with whatever record authorized the destruction, such as a retention schedule, a client file closing memo or an estate inventory. Our page on the certificate of destruction explains what it should show and how long to keep it.
Medical practices sometimes ask whether pickup is “less HIPAA compliant” than watching. HIPAA asks covered entities to safeguard protected health information through disposal and to have a Business Associate Agreement with vendors who handle it. A BAA is available on request with any of our three services, and our medical shredding service page covers practice volume, pickup schedules and paperwork.
Mistakes that make either option cost more
After years of these jobs, the same handful of errors cost New Hampshire customers money or time. None of them is hard to avoid.
- Booking a pickup for two boxes. If you can lift them and you are anywhere near the border, the zone fee is more than the shredding itself.
- Driving four loads from the Seacoast to save one Zone 3 fee. Count your car loads before you choose.
- Stopping at nine boxes. Under 10 boxes is priced by the pound, and nine full boxes cost more than ten at the flat rate.
- Forgetting the stairs. Pickup pricing assumes ground level or an elevator. Tell us about a second-floor walk-up when you book so the handling fee is quoted up front.
- Pulling staples for hours. You can leave staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands and file folders in place. Only three-ring binder hardware and hanging-folder frames need to come out.
- Mixing media into paper boxes. Hard drives, USB sticks, CDs and phones go in a separate bag and are quoted per item.
- Paying witnessed rates for routine paper. Witness the five sensitive boxes and send the other twenty through drop-off at 99 cents.
- Shredding too early. Check the retention rules first so you do not destroy a tax record or a personnel file you still need to keep.
Retention is the one mistake you cannot undo. Before any purge, check your boxes against the federal and New Hampshire periods in our document retention guide. It covers tax returns, payroll, I-9 forms and personnel files with the official source for each.
If you are weighing the cost of a desk shredder against any of these services, that is a different comparison. Our post on shredder vs shredding service runs the yearly numbers.
Offices that purge every quarter often ask whether a standing pickup would be cheaper than one big job a year. Each pickup carries its own zone fee and per-job fees, so fewer, larger jobs usually cost less. Our article on one-time vs scheduled shredding works through the volume thresholds.
Getting ready for a pickup is mostly about access and counts. The shredding pickup checklist lists what the driver needs and who should sign.
Frequently asked questions
Is off-site shredding more expensive per pound than drop-off?
No. Off-site pickup uses the same shredding rate as drop-off: 99 cents a pound, or $15 per small box and $20 per large box at 10 or more boxes. Both carry the same $34.90 per-job fees. The only extra charge on a pickup is the transportation fee for your zone, which is $129.95, $159.95 or $199.95.
At what volume does pickup make sense?
It depends on distance and car loads more than on pounds. If everything fits in one car and you live near the border, drop-off nearly always wins. Once the job needs two or more trips, or a staff member would lose half a day, a single zone fee usually costs less than the driving. Forty boxes from Manchester is a clear pickup.
Which pickup zone am I in?
Zone 1 covers the Tewksbury area and New Hampshire border towns such as Salem, Pelham, Windham and Plaistow. Zone 2 covers greater Nashua and Manchester. Zone 3 covers the Seacoast and points farther north. Your exact zone is confirmed when you book online or call (978) 636-0301, before anything is scheduled.
Is drop-off less secure because the paper waits before shredding?
Drop-off paper is shredded the same business day at the Tewksbury office, and it stays in our locked handling area until then. You see the weight on the scale and hand the boxes over in person. Pickup adds a transport leg, and witnessed removes every gap by letting you watch. All three end with a Certificate of Destruction.
Is witnessed shredding ever cheaper than a pickup?
Yes, for small loads. Witnessed adds about a dollar a pound over drop-off, while a pickup adds a flat zone fee. Below roughly 130 pounds, witnessed is cheaper than a Zone 1 pickup, below about 160 pounds it beats Zone 2, and below about 200 pounds it beats Zone 3. You do have to drive to Tewksbury and book a time.
Do you shred at my office in New Hampshire?
No. All shredding happens at our office at 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, Tewksbury, MA. We do not shred from a truck at the curb or at your address, and we have no New Hampshire location or drop box. With off-site service, the driver collects your sealed boxes and they are shredded after they reach Tewksbury.
What if my office is on the second floor with no elevator?
Pickup prices assume ground-level or elevator access. Stairs or restricted access add a handling fee, which we quote up front when you book, so there is no surprise on the day. Tell us the floor, the number of boxes and whether there is a loading dock or a side entrance the driver should use.
Do I get the same certificate with drop-off and pickup?
Yes. Every job, whether drop-off, pickup or witnessed, includes a Certificate of Destruction at no charge beyond the $14.95 HIPAA filing fee in the per-job fees. With pickup it is issued after your boxes are shredded in Tewksbury. With witnessed shredding it is signed in front of you. Keep it with your retention records.
Do I need an appointment for drop-off?
No. Drop-off is walk-in, Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern. Pickups and witnessed sessions need an appointment, which you can make online or by phone. If you are bringing a very large load or hard drives, a quick call ahead helps us have staff ready to unload and quote the media.
