How a shredding service for Salem NH actually works
We do all our shredding at our office on Route 38 in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. There is no office, drop box or kiosk of ours in Salem or anywhere in New Hampshire, and we don’t bring a shredder to your driveway. For a Salem customer, that is less of a hurdle than it sounds. You are closer to our door than any other New Hampshire town we serve.
So the real question is how your paper gets to Tewksbury. You can carry it in, we can pick it up, or you can book a time and watch it go through the machine. Each one has a place.
Drive it down
Walk in Monday to Friday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. with no appointment. We weigh your boxes, you pay 99 cents a pound (or $15 per small box and $20 per banker’s box at 10 boxes or more), and the paper is shredded that business day. Here is the full rundown on drop-off shredding.
Zone 1 pickup
Salem is in our lowest pickup zone, Zone 1, at $129.95 per trip. You book a date, we load the boxes and bring them back to Tewksbury, where they are shredded after they arrive. Read how off-site shredding works step by step.
Watch it happen
A witnessed session at our office costs $1.99 a pound with a $100 job minimum, plus the per-job fees. You stand at the shredder, see your files destroyed, and the certificate is signed while you are there. Book it ahead.
Whichever you pick, the paper is cross-cut, the shred is recycled, and you leave with a Certificate of Destruction. What you are really choosing between is your time, the $129.95 pickup fee, and whether you need to see it done.
The drive from Salem to 1215 Main Street
From Salem Town Hall on Geremonty Drive, the quick way is the highway. Head to Rockingham Park Boulevard and get on I-93 south. Cross into Massachusetts and stay on I-93 for about six and a half miles to I-495. Take I-495 south toward Lowell for about two miles, get off at Route 133 for Tewksbury and Andover, follow North Street about two miles, and turn left onto Main Street (Route 38). We are just down the road at 1215.
That is about 15 miles. Without traffic it typically takes about 25 minutes. From the south end of Salem, near the Methuen line, you can shave a few minutes off that.
Plenty of Salem people already drive I-93 or I-495 to work in Massachusetts. If that is you, the boxes can ride along in the trunk and come in on a weekday morning or at lunch. We open at 10 a.m. and close at 5 p.m., so an early commuter needs a late-morning stop or a day off, not a 7 a.m. drop. Weigh, pay, take your receipt, and you are back on the road in a few minutes.
- Head for I-93 south. From Town Hall, take Veterans Memorial Parkway to Rockingham Park Boulevard and follow the signs for I-93 south toward Boston.
- Ride I-93 into Massachusetts. You cross the state line almost right away. Stay on for about six and a half miles until the I-495 interchange.
- Take I-495 south toward Lowell. Watch the signs here, since both directions of I-495 split off. You want the Lowell side, and you stay on for about two miles.
- Exit at Route 133 and take North Street. The exit is signed for Tewksbury and Andover. Follow North Street a little over two miles to the end.
- Turn left onto Main Street and pull in. Our building is right there on Route 38. Park out front for free and come inside. Staff will help you unload if the boxes are heavy.
If you’d rather skip the highway, Route 38 runs from Salem through Pelham, Dracut and Lowell and ends up as our Main Street. It is about 20 miles with plenty of lights, so it takes longer, but some people like one road the whole way. Either route clogs at rush hour, so a late morning or early afternoon run is easiest. We cover timing in more detail in our Salem NH to Tewksbury drop-off guide.
Salem prices for drop-off and Zone 1 pickup
Our shredding rates are the same for every customer, from Salem to the Seacoast. What changes for Salem is that the pickup fee is the lowest one we charge, because you are in Zone 1. The full list lives on our shredding rates page, and this is the Salem version.
| What you pay for | Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shredding by the pound | 99¢ per pound | Under 10 boxes, bags and loose paper |
| Small box | $15 each | Flat rate at 10 or more boxes |
| Large banker’s box | $20 each | Flat rate at 10 or more boxes |
| HIPAA filing fee | $14.95 per job | Pays for the Certificate of Destruction paperwork |
| Environmental fee | $19.95 per job | Pays for recycling the shred |
| Zone 1 transportation | $129.95 per pickup | Salem and the other border towns. Zone confirmed when you book |
| Witnessed session | $1.99 per pound | $100 job minimum, by appointment |
| Drives, phones, tapes, discs | Quoted per item | Physically destroyed, bag them separately |
We figure a banker’s box of paper at about 30 pounds. One box at the counter is about $29.70 to shred, plus the $34.90 in per-job fees, so plan on roughly $64.60. Five boxes weigh in around 150 pounds, which comes to $148.50 plus $34.90, about $183.40. The scale has the last word, and tightly packed files run heavier.
The gap between the two bars is always $129.95. On a single box, that fee is twice what the shredding costs, so the drive wins easily. At twenty boxes, $564.85 picked up against $434.90 dropped off, the fee is a smaller share, and the pickup starts to look like a fair trade for your afternoon.
Box count tip: nine banker’s boxes priced by weight run about $267.30 before fees. Ten boxes at the $20 flat rate are $200. If you are sitting at eight or nine, find one more box of old paper and save about $67.
Zone 1 pickup for a shredding service in Salem NH
Pickup makes sense when the boxes outnumber the people who can carry them. It suits an office clearing out a back room, a landlord emptying years of tenant files, or an executor closing up a house. Every pickup needs an appointment, and we don’t do same-day runs, so book a few days out.
- Book it. Use the booking form or call (978) 636-0301. Give us the Salem address, a rough count of boxes and bags, and mention any drives or phones.
- We confirm Zone 1 and the access. Salem is in Zone 1 at $129.95, and we confirm it for your address when you book. That price assumes ground-level or elevator access. Stairs or tight access mean a handling fee, which we tell you up front.
- Pack and stack. Close the boxes and stack them near the door. Staples, clips, rubber bands and file folders can stay. Pull out binder rings, hanging-folder frames and anything that isn’t paper.
- We load and drive to Tewksbury. The boxes stay in locked handling from your door to our office, where they are shredded after they arrive.
- File your certificate. Your Certificate of Destruction comes with the job. Keep it with your records as proof of when the material was destroyed.
Here is a real-size example. Twenty banker’s boxes picked up from a Salem office come to $400 for the boxes, $34.90 in per-job fees and $129.95 for Zone 1, for a total of $564.85. For a big cleanout that is often less than the hours your staff would spend loading cars and driving. Our page on shredding pickup cost by distance shows how Zone 1 compares to the zones farther north.
Tell us about the building when you book. A ground-floor unit in a plaza off Route 28 is quick. A second-floor office with no elevator takes longer, and the handling fee reflects that. We would rather sort it out on the phone than at your door.
What comes with every Salem job
The service you pick changes the price and who does the driving. It doesn’t change what happens to your paper or the proof you get afterward.

- Locked handling and a documented chain of custody
- A Certificate of Destruction on every job, drop-off, pickup or witnessed
- A Business Associate Agreement on request for HIPAA covered entities and business associates
- All shredded paper recycled
- No long-term contract, book once or as often as you need
Salem businesses along Route 28 and Route 97
Most of Salem’s businesses sit along two roads. Route 28, which locals call Broadway, carries the retail strip, the car dealers and a long run of plazas full of professional offices. Route 97, Salem’s Main Street, crosses it at the Depot and heads east past more offices and small practices. Add Tuscan Village and the stores and offices around the Mall at Rockingham Park, and you have a lot of paper being made in a small area.
That paper comes with rules. If your business pulls credit reports, on car buyers or on tenants, the FTC Disposal Rule (16 CFR Part 682) says you must burn, pulverize or shred them when you throw them out. The FTC names auto dealers and landlords in its own guidance on the rule.
Medical and dental
Intake forms, schedules and EOBs hold protected health information. HIPAA expects safeguards through disposal. Our medical shredding service page covers the rules and the BAA.
Dealers and finance desks
Credit applications and deal jackets fall under the Disposal Rule. More on that in our page on Salem NH business shredding.
Tax and insurance offices
Tax preparers fall under the GLBA Safeguards Rule (16 CFR Part 314). Prior-year client files past their retention date should be shredded, not binned.
Landlords and property managers
Old applications, credit reports and lease files. A spring cleanout of a few boxes is an easy drop-off run down I-93.
For HIPAA practices, the two sections to know are 45 CFR 164.530(c), the general duty to safeguard health information, and 45 CFR 164.310(d)(2)(i), which calls for policies on disposing of anything that holds electronic health information. Shredding paper so it can’t be read or put back together meets that duty for paper. A Business Associate Agreement is available on request, and every job comes with a certificate for your compliance file.
Don’t forget the hardware. Old office computers, copier drives and phones should not go to the curb. Bag them separately and we physically destroy them, quoted per item. Our hard drive destruction page explains what we take. New Hampshire’s breach notice law, RSA 359-C:20, covers computerized personal information, which is a good reason to treat a dead laptop like a full filing cabinet.
Shredding for Salem homes
Salem households usually show up with one of a few loads. It might be seven years of tax returns from the basement, a pile of bank statements, or the papers from a parent’s house after a move or a death. Everything with a Social Security number or an account number on it deserves the shredder rather than the recycling bin.
For a household in Salem, drop-off is the obvious choice. Two boxes come to about $94.30 at the counter and three to about $124. You can be there and back in about an hour, and pair it with an errand in Tewksbury or Andover.
Pickup is for the bigger jobs. An executor clearing a Salem house with fifteen boxes, or someone who can’t lift them, should let us handle the loading. Our residential shredding page has more household examples, and there is a Salem-specific guide to Salem NH home shredding.
Check retention before you shred tax paperwork. The IRS keeps it fairly simple. Most records need 3 years. Keep them 6 years if you left out income worth more than 25 percent of the gross income on the return, and 7 years if you claimed a loss on worthless securities or a bad debt deduction. Employment tax records need 4 years.
| Household record | Keep at least | After that |
|---|---|---|
| Most income tax records | 3 years (IRS) | Shred |
| Returns with income left out worth more than 25 percent of gross | 6 years (IRS) | Shred |
| Worthless securities or bad debt deduction | 7 years (IRS) | Shred |
| Employment tax records for a household employer | 4 years (IRS) | Shred |
| No return filed, or a fraudulent return | Indefinitely (IRS) | Keep |
Skip the sorting. Staples, paper clips and folders can all go in. Just remove the rings from three-ring binders and the metal frames from hanging folders, and put any old phones or drives in their own bag so we can quote them.
What the Salem transfer station takes, and what it doesn’t
Salem runs a transfer station on Shannon Road, reached from Route 97 by way of Hampstead Street. It is for residents only, and you need the town sticker on your windshield. Stickers cost $60, run from October 1 to September 30, and are sold at the Town Clerk and Collections office in Town Hall at 33 Geremonty Drive. Residents 65 and over get one free permit for a personal vehicle.
Newspaper, cardboard and the bottles-and-cans mix go into the recycling building there. That is fine for flyers and boxes. It is not where you want old bank statements and pay stubs to end up, since paper in a recycling stream is handled as paper, not as confidential records.
The town’s own page says the transfer station is for residents and that businesses must arrange their own waste removal with private haulers. Commercial waste is not accepted. So a Salem business has no town option for its office paper at all, which is exactly where a shredding service comes in.
Free shred days pop up in the area now and then, usually hosted by a bank, a credit union or a community group, with limits on how much you can bring. If one lines up with your schedule, use it. For everything else, and for any business that needs a certificate, our counter is open every weekday. Our page on shred events explains how they work.
Salem’s ZIP code is 03079, and all of it is in our Zone 1 for pickup. The same goes for the other border towns. We serve shredding service Pelham NH customers just to the west and document shredding in Plaistow NH to the east. Up I-93 there is shredding service Derry NH and shredding service Londonderry NH. Every town we cover is grouped by zone on our service areas page.
Drop-off, pickup or witnessed from Salem
This is the advice we give Salem customers on the phone. Because you are so close, the bar for paying the pickup fee is higher than it is for Nashua or Manchester.
| Your situation | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 5 boxes from home | Drop-off | About $64.60 for one box, about $183.40 for five. Pickup adds $129.95 |
| 8 or 9 boxes | Drop-off, bring 10 | The $20 box rate at 10 boxes beats nine boxes by weight |
| 10 to 20 boxes and a car | Drop-off | $234.90 for ten, $434.90 for twenty, fees included |
| A big office cleanout or no one to lift | Zone 1 pickup | $129.95 is often less than a staff afternoon |
| Files you need to see destroyed | Witnessed | $1.99 per pound, $100 minimum, certificate signed with you there |
| Hard drives, phones, discs | Separate bag | Physically destroyed, quoted per item |
Put simply, from Salem you should drive almost every job under twenty boxes. Twenty-five minutes down I-93 is hard to beat. Book the pickup when the job is big, the building is awkward, or the people who would carry the boxes are better used elsewhere. The longer comparison is on our page about drop-off vs off-site.
Witnessed sessions cost more because one of our team runs your paper while you watch. A single box falls under the $100 minimum. Five boxes, about 150 pounds, come to about $298.50 plus $34.90 in fees. If you need it, read how witnessed shredding works first.
Frequently asked questions
What does a shredding service in Salem NH cost for a few boxes?
A banker’s box weighs about 30 pounds, so each one is about $29.70 at 99 cents a pound. Add $34.90 in per-job fees. One box is about $64.60, three boxes about $124 and five boxes about $183.40 at our Tewksbury counter. A Zone 1 pickup from Salem adds $129.95 to any of those.
Is there a drop-off location in Salem NH?
No. We shred only at our office at 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, Tewksbury, MA. We have no office, drop box or kiosk in Salem or anywhere in New Hampshire. Salem is the closest New Hampshire town to us, though, about 15 miles away and typically about 25 minutes by I-93 and I-495 without traffic.
What is the fastest route from Salem to your office?
Take I-93 south from Rockingham Park Boulevard into Massachusetts, then I-495 south toward Lowell. Exit at Route 133 for Tewksbury and Andover, follow North Street, and turn left onto Main Street (Route 38). It is about 15 miles. Route 38 through Pelham, Dracut and Lowell also works but is slower.
Which pickup zone is Salem in?
Salem is in Zone 1, our lowest pickup zone, with a $129.95 transportation fee per pickup. You also pay the normal shredding rates and the $34.90 per-job fees. We confirm the zone for your address when you book. The price assumes ground-level or elevator access, and stairs carry a handling fee quoted up front.
Can I take office paper to the Salem transfer station?
The town’s page says the transfer station is for Salem residents with a sticker and that businesses must arrange their own waste removal with private haulers. Commercial waste is not accepted. Even for residents, the recycling building there takes newspaper and cardboard as ordinary recycling, which is not the place for confidential records.
Do you sign a BAA for Salem medical offices?
Yes. We sign a Business Associate Agreement on request for HIPAA covered entities and business associates. Every job also includes a Certificate of Destruction. A small Salem practice might drive a few boxes down each month and book a Zone 1 pickup once a year for the larger records purge.
Do I have to remove staples and paper clips?
No. Staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands and file folders can stay. Remove three-ring binder hardware, the metal frames from hanging folders and anything that is not paper. Hard drives, phones and discs go in a separate bag, and we quote them per item before we destroy them.
Why should I bring 10 boxes instead of 9?
Under 10 boxes we charge by weight, so nine banker’s boxes at about 30 pounds each cost about $267.30 before fees. At 10 boxes or more you pay a flat $20 per large box, so ten boxes are $200 before fees. If you are close to ten, the extra box actually lowers your bill.
Can I watch my documents being shredded?
Yes, with a witnessed session at our Tewksbury office. It costs $1.99 per pound with a $100 job minimum, plus the $34.90 per-job fees. You watch your material go through the shredder and the Certificate of Destruction is signed in front of you. Witnessed sessions need an appointment, so call or book online first.
