Document shredding Dover NH: when to drive south and when to book a pickup

Dover is the far end of our map, about 55 miles from the Tewksbury office where every job is shredded. This page shows Dover homes and businesses what each option costs, how long the drive really takes, and how the city’s own trash and recycling rules fit in.

99¢ per pound at our Tewksbury drop-off. Dover pickups are Zone 3. Certificate of Destruction on every job.

Quick answer

New Hampshire Document Shredding shreds Dover paper at its office at 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, Tewksbury, MA, about 55 miles and 70 to 75 minutes away by the Spaulding Turnpike, I-95 and I-495. Dropped off, you pay 99 cents per pound (about $29.70 per 30 pound box), or $20 per large box at 10 or more, plus $34.90 per job. A Dover pickup is Zone 3 and adds $199.95, which is usually the better deal once you pass about 10 boxes.

The honest part: how far Dover is from our shredder

We will start with the thing most shredding pages bury. We have no office in Dover and no truck that shreds in your parking lot. All of our document shredding happens at one counter on Route 38 in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. From Dover City Hall at 288 Central Avenue, a route planner puts that counter about 55 miles away, or roughly 70 to 75 minutes in ordinary traffic.

That is a real drive, about two and a half hours round trip before you add time at the counter. For some Dover customers it still makes sense, especially if you already head south on I-95 for work or family. For many it does not, and that is exactly why the pickup exists. The rest of this page helps you decide which camp you are in.

Mileage comes from a route planner checked in November 2026 and will vary a little with where in Dover you start. Rush hour on the Spaulding and on I-495 near Lawrence can add a good deal. Our counter opens at 10 a.m., so a mid-morning departure from Dover usually puts you there with the morning traffic behind you.

Winter changes the picture too. Fifty-five miles of highway with a car full of paper is not a trip to make in a January snowstorm. Paper keeps. If the forecast is bad, leave the boxes in the closet and come another week, or book a pickup and let us watch the weather.

Drive or pickup: where the line falls for Dover

The shredding charge is the same whichever way your boxes reach us. Under 10 boxes we charge 99 cents a pound, and a banker’s box of paper weighs about 30 pounds. At 10 boxes or more it becomes a flat $15 per small or $20 per large box. Every job carries $34.90 in per-job fees, which covers the HIPAA filing behind your Certificate of Destruction and the recycling of the shred. A pickup adds one more line: the $199.95 Zone 3 transport fee.

The gold block is the same $199.95 on every column. Against one box it dominates the bill. Against twenty boxes it is less than a third of it.

5 boxes (about 150 lb)$183.40$383.35Drive if you have a free weekday. Otherwise keep collecting until you have more

20 large boxes$434.90$634.85Pickup. Twenty boxes are more than most cars carry anyway

Our rule of thumb for Dover is a little different from towns closer to the line. From Salem, a five box drive is a twenty minute errand. From Dover it is a half day. If paying $199.95 buys a staff member back two and a half hours, the pickup often pays for itself well before 10 boxes. Our post on pickup cost by distance runs the same comparison for other zones.

The three services, as they work from Dover

Drop-off is the walk-in option. You bring the boxes to 1215 Main Street any weekday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., we weigh them in front of you, and the paper is shredded the same business day. Free parking is right out front and staff help you unload. Our drop-off shredding page covers the visit in more detail.

Pickup is by appointment. A driver collects sealed boxes from your Dover office or home at ground level, and the boxes travel locked to Tewksbury, where they are shredded after they arrive. Pickups are booked ahead, never for the day you call, so give yourself some lead time. The off-site shredding page explains zones, access and handling fees.

Witnessed shredding is the third route. You book a time, bring the boxes yourself and stand beside the shredder while every page goes in. It costs $1.99 per pound with a $100 minimum, plus $34.90. From Dover it only makes sense when watching matters, such as a closed legal file, a trust or a personnel dispute. Our witnessed shredding page has the details.

All three end with the same Certificate of Destruction, the same cross-cut shredding and the same recycling of the shredded paper.

Dover’s offices, mills and business parks

Dover is the oldest permanent settlement in New Hampshire, settled in 1623, and it has reinvented itself more than once. The city’s own history page describes the Cochecho Falls Millworks downtown as humming with office workers and their computers rather than looms. Add the industrial and business parks on the outskirts, the shops along Central Avenue and the “Miracle Mile” plazas north of downtown, and you have a city that makes a lot of paper.

Mill and downtown offices

Firms in the restored mills and along Central Avenue often clear old files once a year, after tax season. An office emptying a storage room can easily fill ten or twenty boxes, and that is pickup territory. Ask for the certificate to name the firm, so it files neatly with your records policy.

Business and industrial parks

Manufacturers and distributors on the city’s edge hold HR files, payroll, bills of lading and customer records. If your building has a loading dock or ground-level access, the pickup stays at the standard price with no handling fee.

Medical and dental practices

HIPAA’s Privacy Rule, 45 CFR 164.530(c), expects reasonable safeguards for patient records right through disposal, and the Security Rule adds disposal policies for electronic media. We sign a Business Associate Agreement on request. Our medical shredding service page explains how practices use us.

Households

Most homes have two to five boxes of old statements, returns and bills. From Dover we would usually suggest collecting them until a trip south is already planned, or using a community shred day for a single box. Our residential shredding page has a keep-or-shred checklist.

Landlords and property managers

Rental applications, credit reports and old leases are exactly what identity thieves want. The FTC Disposal Rule (16 CFR Part 682) expects anyone who uses consumer reports to dispose of them with reasonable measures such as shredding. A yearly pickup handles a portfolio’s worth of files at once.

Executors and families

Clearing a parent’s house in one of Dover’s older neighbourhoods often turns up decades of paper. Keep what the estate attorney and the final tax returns need, then box the rest. If the count passes 10, book one pickup instead of several long drives.

If you do drive from Dover, make the miles count

Plenty of Dover customers still choose the drive, and that is a reasonable call when the boxes are few and the day is free. The trick is to make one trip do the work of several. A half-full car costs you the same two and a half hours as a full one.

Fill the car once

Wait until you have a real load. Five or six banker’s boxes fit in most hatchbacks with the seats down. Go through the hall closet, the basement shelves and the desk drawers before you go, so you are not making the same trip again in March.

If a parent or a neighbour has their own boxes, they can come along. Each customer’s job carries its own $34.90 per-job fees and its own certificate, but the miles are shared.

Pick the right day

Weekdays only. The counter opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m., and there are no Saturday hours. A Tuesday or Wednesday mid-morning departure from Dover usually means lighter traffic on the Spaulding and I-495 than a Monday or Friday.

Tie it to something else you already do in the Merrimack Valley or north of Boston. When the trip is happening anyway, the drop-off adds only the time at our counter, and the numbers in the table above swing firmly toward driving.

When you arrive, pull into the lot at 1215 Main Street and come to Unit 115. Staff help you unload, weigh the boxes where you can see the scale, and tell you the total before anything is shredded. The paper is shredded the same business day, and the certificate follows.

Dover’s trash system is changing in 2027. Your paper plan should not wait

Right now Dover runs a bag-and-tag curbside program through Waste Management. Household trash goes out in official Dover bags, $2.34 for a 15 gallon bag and $3.91 for a 30 gallon bag, with weight limits of 20 and 35 pounds. Bulky items take a $10 tag. Everything has to be at the curb by 7 a.m. on pickup day.

The city has announced that on July 1, 2027, curbside trash and recycling will move to a toter system, and bag-and-tag will be phased out. The City Council has been working on the ordinance changes this fall. A change like that is a natural moment to clear out the garage or basement before next summer, and old paperwork tends to surface when you do.

For paper, the current rules are simple. Curbside recycling takes paper only if it is bundled or in a paper bag, with cardboard broken down beside the bin. The Recycling Center at 265 Mast Road accepts mixed paper and cardboard, including office paper, envelopes, junk mail and catalogs. It is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., plus Sunday mornings from November 1 to December 6, 2026.

None of that destroys anything. A bundle of old bank statements is just as readable at the recycling center as it was in your filing cabinet. Use the city’s program for junk mail and catalogs, and send anything with an account number, Social Security number or signature through a shredder first.

Planning a clear-out before the toter switch? Sort it into three piles: recycle (catalogs, flyers, envelopes with nothing personal), shred (anything with a name and a number), and keep (deeds, wills, recent tax years). Only the shred pile needs us. Our document retention guide helps with the keep pile.

Old computers: Mast Road takes the hardware, not the risk

The Dover Recycling Center takes computer equipment for a small charge: $5 for a laptop, printer or scanner, $10 for a monitor, and no charge for a CPU tower, keyboard or mouse. Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries are illegal to put in household trash under state law and go in the right bin at the center. That covers the hardware. It does not cover what is stored on it.

A tower dropped off for free still holds every file on its hard drive. Deleting files or reformatting rarely removes data in a way that holds up. If the machine belonged to a business, the stakes rise. New Hampshire’s breach notice law, RSA 359-C:20, says a business that becomes aware of a security breach of computerized personal information has to work out whether it is likely to be misused and, if so, notify the people affected.

The clean answer is to pull the drive before the hardware goes to Mast Road. Bring the drives, phones, tapes and USB sticks to us in a separate bag and we physically destroy them. Media is quoted per item, separately from paper. Our hard drive destruction page explains what we take and how it is documented.

Phones and USB sticks deserve the same care. An old phone in a kitchen drawer can hold years of texts, photos of checks and saved passwords. Thumb drives from a former employee’s desk can hold anything. Put them all in one bag, mark it, and mention it when you book so we can quote the job before we start.

  • Remove the hard drive or solid-state drive from every old desktop and laptop
  • Bag phones, tablets, USB sticks and backup tapes separately from paper
  • Recycle the empty shells, monitors and batteries through the city
  • Keep the certificate with your IT asset records

How a Dover pickup works, start to finish

A pickup moves the driving to us. The shredding still happens in Tewksbury, not in your lot. Here is the sequence from booking to certificate.

  1. Count the boxes. Note how many small and large boxes you have and where they sit. Under 10 boxes we will bill by weight, so a rough count of about 30 pounds a box gives you a fair estimate.
  2. Book a date. Book online or call (978) 636-0301. We confirm that Dover is Zone 3 at $199.95, give you a date, and flag any stairs or tight access, which carry a handling fee quoted up front.
  3. Pack and seal. Leave staples, clips, rubber bands and file folders in. Remove three-ring binder hardware and hanging-folder frames. Bag any media separately and tell us about it.
  4. Hand over. The driver loads the sealed boxes at ground level or by elevator and records the count. Someone from your office or household should be there.
  5. Shredded in Tewksbury. The boxes travel locked to our office, where they are weighed or counted and then cross-cut shredded. The shred is baled and recycled.
  6. Certificate. Your certificate of destruction arrives with the invoice. Keep it with your retention log or the estate file.

Some practical details make pickup day go smoothly. Tell us where the driver can park close to the door, which entrance to use, and whether the building locks at a certain hour. Mill buildings with shared corridors and freight elevators are fine, as long as we know about them in advance. If the boxes are on an upper floor without an elevator, say so when you book so the handling fee is quoted up front.

No long-term contract is involved. You book when you have a pile, and you book again next year if you need to. If your office would rather not keep a storage room full of boxes, a once-a-year pickup after tax season is a simple habit to adopt.

Dover ZIP code, nearby towns and shred days

Dover City Hall at 288 Central Avenue uses ZIP code 03820. Every Dover pickup is Zone 3, our zone for the Seacoast and points north, at $199.95, and the zone is confirmed whenever you book. The neighbouring Seacoast towns sit in the same zone, so the math on this page holds for them too.

Down the Spaulding, our page on shredding in Portsmouth covers downtown and Pease offices. Portsmouth households have their own guide to home shredding on the Seacoast. Inland, the Exeter shredding page compares three routes south, and the Hampton page covers the beach towns. Every town we serve is on the service areas map.

For a single box, a free community shred day is often the sensible choice from Dover. Towns, banks and credit unions on the Seacoast hold them from time to time. We do not run free events, but our shred events page explains how to find one. For everything bigger, or for any week of the year, the pickup is there.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a shredding location in Dover NH?

No. New Hampshire Document Shredding has no office, kiosk or drop box in Dover or anywhere in New Hampshire. We shred at 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, Tewksbury, MA, about 55 miles from Dover City Hall. Dover customers either drive their boxes down or book a Zone 3 pickup, and we bring the boxes back to Tewksbury to shred.

How much does a Dover pickup cost?

A Dover pickup adds the $199.95 Zone 3 transport fee to the normal shredding charge and the $34.90 per-job fees. Ten large boxes come to $434.85 in total and twenty large boxes to $634.85. Under 10 boxes you pay by weight, at 99 cents a pound. Stairs or restricted access carry a handling fee, quoted before the day.

How long does it take to drive from Dover to Tewksbury?

About 55 miles and 70 to 75 minutes from Dover City Hall, according to a route planner. The route runs down the Spaulding Turnpike to I-95 south and I-495 south, then Route 38 in Tewksbury. Rush hour on the Spaulding or on I-495 near Lawrence adds time. Our counter is open weekdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Is it worth driving a few boxes from Dover?

Only if you are heading south anyway. Three boxes cost about $124.00 at the counter, against about $323.95 picked up, so the drive saves $199.95. It also costs you roughly two and a half hours on the road. For one or two boxes, a free community shred day on the Seacoast may be the simplest answer.

Can I take old files to the Dover Recycling Center instead?

The Recycling Center at 265 Mast Road accepts office paper, envelopes and junk mail for recycling. Recycling does not destroy anything, so whole statements stay readable on the way through. Use the city’s program for catalogs and flyers, and send anything with account numbers, Social Security numbers or signatures through a shredder first.

What happens to my boxes after a Dover pickup?

Your sealed boxes ride locked with the driver to our Tewksbury office. There they are weighed or counted, cross-cut shredded, and the shred is baled and recycled. You receive a Certificate of Destruction for the job. Pickups are by appointment, and the material is shredded after it arrives at the office.

Do you destroy hard drives from Dover businesses?

Yes. Bring or send drives, phones, tapes and USB sticks in a separate bag and we physically destroy them at our office. Media is quoted per item, separately from paper. Recycle the empty computer shells and batteries through the Dover Recycling Center, which charges small fees for laptops, printers and monitors.

Do Dover medical offices get a Business Associate Agreement?

Yes, on request. Covered entities and business associates under HIPAA can ask for a Business Associate Agreement before the first job. Every job also comes with a Certificate of Destruction, covered by the $14.95 HIPAA filing fee inside the $34.90 per-job fees. Most practices book a pickup for a records purge.
