Document shredding in Hampton NH: drive it down or book a pickup
Hampton homes, beach rentals and Lafayette Road offices have three ways to get old paper shredded by us, and this page prices each one from your end of I-95. You will also find the drive, the town’s own recycling rules, and an honest view of when the trip is worth it.

Quick answer
New Hampshire Document Shredding shreds Hampton paper at its office at 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, Tewksbury, MA, about 36 miles and roughly 50 minutes away by I-95 and I-495. If you drive it down, you pay 99 cents per pound (about $29.70 for a 30 pound box) plus $34.90 in per-job fees. If we pick up in Hampton, it is the same shredding rate plus the $199.95 Zone 3 transport fee, so the pickup pays off for an office purge, not for two boxes.
Three ways to shred your Hampton paperwork with us
We are not a Hampton business, and we will not pretend to be. All of our document shredding happens at one place: our office on Route 38 in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, just over the state line from Salem and Pelham. We have no storefront, drop box or truck parked on Lafayette Road. What we do have is a counter that has been taking New Hampshire boxes since 2007 and a simple price list.
From Hampton you get there one of three ways. You can load the car and use our drop-off shredding counter on any weekday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., no appointment needed. You can book a pickup, and a driver collects sealed boxes from your house or office and brings them back to Tewksbury to be shredded. Or you can book a witnessed session and stand next to the shredder while your files go in.
Each option ends the same way. The paper is cross-cut shredded at our office, the shred is baled and recycled, and you get a Certificate of Destruction with the date, the weight and what was destroyed. The only real differences are who does the driving, whether you watch, and what that costs.
Hampton sits at the far end of our service area. That is the honest headline for this page. It is close enough that a planned drive works, and far enough that the pickup carries our highest transport fee. The rest of this page helps you pick the cheaper side of that line.
Drop-off in Tewksbury
Walk in Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We weigh the boxes in front of you and shred the paper the same business day. 99 cents per pound under 10 boxes, $15 per small or $20 per large box at 10 or more, plus $34.90 per job. Free parking and staff help you unload.
Pickup from Hampton
By appointment. A driver collects your sealed boxes at ground level and takes them to Tewksbury, where they are shredded after they arrive. Same shredding rates as the counter, plus the $199.95 Zone 3 transport fee and the $34.90 per-job fees. The zone is confirmed when you book.
Witnessed session
Booked ahead at our office. You watch every box go into the shredder and the certificate is signed in front of you. $1.99 per pound with a $100 job minimum, plus $34.90 per job. Worth it for a law partner, an executor or anyone who simply wants to see it happen.
The drive from Hampton to 1215 Main Street, Tewksbury
From the town offices at 100 Winnacunnet Road, a route planner puts our door about 36 miles away. In normal midday traffic that is around 50 minutes. Leave at 4 p.m. on a Friday in July and it is a different trip. Plan the run for a weekday morning and you will have the counter mostly to yourself.
- Head south on US 1. From Winnacunnet Road, get onto Lafayette Road (US 1) and follow it south through Hampton Falls into Seabrook, where route planners pick up I-95 south.
- I-95 south across the line. Join I-95 south. It crosses into Massachusetts at Salisbury after only a few miles.
- Bear right onto I-495 south. Right after the state line, I-495 splits off toward Haverhill, Lawrence and Lowell. Stay on it for roughly 25 miles, past Andover.
- Come off at Tewksbury. Follow your GPS off I-495 in Tewksbury onto Route 38, Main Street. Some apps send you off at Route 133 and down North Street to Main Street. Either way you end up on Main Street.
- Park at Unit 115. Pull into the lot at 1215 Main Street. Parking is free, and staff come out to help with the boxes. Bring a list of anything you want noted on the certificate.
Coming from Hampton Beach rather than the town center, add the run in from the shore first. Summer beach traffic is the one thing that really stretches this trip, along with the usual rush hour on I-495 around Lawrence and Andover. If you already have a reason to be in the Merrimack Valley, such as a medical appointment or a visit to family, the drop-off fits neatly onto that errand.
Our hours are Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no Saturday counter. If weekdays are impossible, call (978) 636-0301 and ask about a booked pickup or an appointment outside regular hours.
What document shredding costs from Hampton
Every bill has the same three parts. The shredding charge is weight times 99 cents for fewer than 10 boxes, or a flat $15 per small box and $20 per large banker’s box once you bring 10 or more. Every job adds $34.90 in per-job fees: $14.95 for the HIPAA filing that covers your Certificate of Destruction and $19.95 for recycling the shred. If we drive to Hampton, add the $199.95 Zone 3 transport fee.
| How much paper | Shredding charge | Drive it to Tewksbury | Pickup from Hampton (Zone 3) | What the pickup adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 banker’s box (about 30 lb) | $29.70 | $64.60 | $264.55 | $199.95 |
| 5 boxes (about 150 lb) | $148.50 | $183.40 | $383.35 | $199.95 |
| 10 large boxes | $200.00 | $234.90 | $434.85 | $199.95 |
| 20 large boxes | $400.00 | $434.90 | $634.85 | $199.95 |
Read the chart from left to right and the pattern is plain. For one box, the pickup costs four times the drop-off. At 20 boxes it is less than half again. Weights here use about 30 pounds per banker’s box. Real boxes vary, and we bill what the scale says, so a box of glossy catalogs or bound ledgers can come in heavier.
The fees are the same for every service. You never pay the $34.90 twice on one job, and the certificate is included in it. For the full price list with stairs, witnessed sessions and media, see our shredding rates page. If you want to see how the zones compare across the state, our post on pickup cost by distance works through Nashua and the Seacoast side by side.
Which service fits which Hampton customer
Seacoast callers tend to fall into the same handful of situations. Find yours below. The rule of thumb is short: for three boxes, drive. For thirty, book the pickup. In between, it depends on whether you have a reason to be on I-495 anyway.
A household clearing old tax years
Most homes have two to five boxes of bank statements, old returns and medical bills. Drive them down. At five boxes you pay about $183.40 at the counter against about $383.35 for a pickup. Our residential shredding page lists what to keep before you shred.
A second-home owner closing up for winter
If the beach house is closing in October and you head home south through Massachusetts anyway, the Tewksbury counter is on the way for many people. Put the boxes in the car, stop on a weekday, and keep driving. No appointment and no waiting around in Hampton for a driver.
A landlord with tenant files
Applications, credit reports and old leases carry exactly the data identity thieves want. The FTC Disposal Rule (16 CFR Part 682) requires reasonable disposal of consumer report information, such as burning, pulverizing or shredding. Our page on shredding for Hampton businesses and seasonal rentals covers this in detail.
An office on Lafayette Road
A small insurance, real estate or accounting office clearing a storage room is the classic pickup job. Twenty boxes cost about $634.85 picked up, and nobody on your staff loses a morning to the drive. Our off-site shredding page explains how the pickup works.
A dental or medical practice
HIPAA expects reasonable safeguards for paper records right up to disposal, under 45 CFR 164.530(c). We sign a Business Associate Agreement on request. A practice purge usually runs big enough for a pickup to make sense. Our medical shredding service page covers the paperwork.
An executor sorting a parent’s house
Estate paperwork tends to come out in waves as you sort room by room. Shred the first wave at the counter once the attorney and the final returns are covered. If the attic turns up twenty more boxes, book one pickup for the rest rather than four trips down I-95.
The witnessed session deserves a word, because it is the one Seacoast customers most often skip past. It costs more per pound, but for a small, sensitive load it can cost less than a pickup. Fifty pounds witnessed is the $100 minimum plus $34.90, or $134.90, against $284.35 for the same 50 pounds picked up from Hampton. If you are driving down anyway and the files belong to a trust, a closed law matter or a personnel dispute, booking a slot to watch is often the better choice. Our witnessed shredding page covers how the appointment runs.
Not sure which side of the line you are on? Count your boxes, multiply by about 30 pounds, and compare the two columns in the price table above. Or call us at (978) 636-0301 with a rough count and we will tell you which way is cheaper.
What Hampton’s own recycling program will and will not do
Hampton runs curbside trash and recycling through the Department of Public Works, with residents using town-issued carts. The DPW and the Transfer Station are at 1 Hardardt’s Way, and the Transfer Station is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday from noon to 3 p.m. It is closed Tuesdays. Use needs a resident transfer station permit, issued to vehicles registered to residents or property owners.
On paper, the town is more relaxed than some neighbours. The Transfer Station page says clean, dry paper can be recycled whole or shredded. If you shred at home, put the strips in a paper bag or a cardboard box so they do not blow around when the cart is tipped, and never in a plastic bag.
So why pay us at all? Because recycling a whole statement is not destroying it. Paper in a curbside cart travels on an open truck and through a sorting line with your name, account numbers and signature still readable. That is fine for junk mail and catalogs. It is not fine for a tax return, a tenant’s credit report or a patient chart.
Home shredding is the other route, and for a handful of envelopes a week it works. For a closet of old files it means hours of feeding a desktop shredder that overheats every few minutes.
Electronics are a separate story. The Hampton Transfer Station takes TVs and computer monitors for a $15 charge each and accepts computer peripherals, phones and tablets. Disposal is not data destruction. Pull hard drives and have them physically destroyed first. Our hard drive destruction page explains how we quote that per item.
The same Transfer Station page reminds residents that, since July 1, 2025, lithium-ion batteries may not be thrown away as trash anywhere in New Hampshire, and the station takes them for recycling. Old laptops and phones carry both problems at once: a battery that needs recycling and a drive or memory chip full of personal data. Bring us the drive, and take the battery and the empty shell to Hardardt’s Way.
Timing your Hampton shredding around the season
Hampton is two towns depending on the month. The town’s own collection schedule runs a summer timetable from the third Monday of June through the Tuesday after the Seafood Festival in September. Traffic on US 1, Ocean Boulevard and the I-95 ramps follows the same calendar. Shredding is not urgent the way a burst pipe is, so you can almost always choose a quieter week.
Best months to drive down
Late September through May. Beach traffic is gone and weekday mornings on I-95 south are light. If you work in Hampton, a mid-morning run on a Tuesday or Wednesday is about as easy as this trip gets. Arrive after 10 a.m., when our counter opens.
Tax season is also a natural moment. Once your current return is filed, the IRS general guideline of keeping returns and records for three years tells you which older years can go. Some situations call for six or seven years, so check before you shred.
When a pickup makes more sense in summer
If you run a rental office, a seasonal business or a practice that cannot spare a person for two hours in July, book the pickup. The driver deals with the traffic, and you hand over sealed boxes at ground level. Tell us if the boxes are up a flight of stairs or behind a narrow beach-cottage door, because a handling fee applies for stairs or restricted access and we quote it up front.
Hampton also asks rental owners to keep a Certificate of Rental Occupancy current, with an inspection every five years. October, after the last guests leave, is when many owners sort the year’s paperwork. That makes it a sensible month to clear old applications too.
What happens when we pick up in Hampton
A pickup is the right call for a big job, and it helps to know exactly how it runs before you book. Nothing about it happens in your driveway. We collect, we drive, we shred in Tewksbury.
You book online or by phone and tell us roughly how many boxes and where they are. We confirm the zone, which for Hampton is Zone 3 at $199.95, and give you a date. Pickups are by appointment only, so we cannot promise a same-day visit. Book as early as you can and we will offer the first date that works.
Before the driver arrives, pack the paper into closed boxes. You do not need to pull staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands or file folders. Do take out three-ring binder hardware and hanging-folder frames, and put any hard drives, discs or USB sticks in a separate bag, because media is quoted on its own.
The driver loads the sealed boxes, notes the count, and leaves. Your boxes travel straight to our Tewksbury office in a locked vehicle, where they are weighed and shredded after they arrive. You are billed for the actual weight, or by the box at 10 or more, plus the transport fee and the $34.90 per-job fees.
Your certificate of destruction follows once the job is finished. File it with your records. For a practice or a landlord, it is the piece of paper that shows when and how the old files were destroyed.
- Boxes closed and stacked at ground level or near an elevator
- Binder rings and hanging-folder frames removed
- Media bagged separately and mentioned when you book
- Someone on site to hand the boxes over
- A name for the certificate if it should go to an office, trust or estate
Hampton ZIP code, nearby towns and free shred days
Hampton’s town offices and its DPW both use the 03842 ZIP code. Pickups anywhere in town are Zone 3, the same as the rest of the Seacoast, and the exact zone is always confirmed when you book. Close neighbours share the same math, so the comparisons above hold for most of the coast.
| Where you are | Pickup zone | Our page for that town |
|---|---|---|
| Hampton, 03842 (town center and beach) | Zone 3, $199.95 | This page |
| Exeter, inland on Route 101 | Zone 3, $199.95 | Exeter town page |
| Portsmouth and Pease | Zone 3, $199.95 | Portsmouth page |
| Plaistow and the border towns | Zone 1, $129.95 | Plaistow page |
Up the coast, our page on shredding in Portsmouth covers Pease and downtown offices. Inland, the Exeter shredding guide covers a town whose recycling rules are stricter than Hampton’s. The full map is on our service areas page.
Free community shred days are another option for a box or two. Towns, banks and credit unions around the Seacoast run them now and then, and a popular one can mean a wait in line. We do not run free events. Our page on shred events explains how to find them, and when a paid drop-off is the better use of your Saturday.
Frequently asked questions
Do you have a drop-off location in Hampton NH?
No. We have no office, kiosk or drop box in Hampton or anywhere in New Hampshire. All shredding happens at our office at 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, Tewksbury, MA. Hampton customers either drive their boxes down, about 36 miles by I-95 and I-495, or book a pickup and we collect the boxes and bring them to Tewksbury.
How much does a pickup from Hampton cost?
A Hampton pickup is Zone 3, which adds a $199.95 transport fee to the normal shredding rate and the $34.90 per-job fees. Five boxes of about 30 pounds each come to roughly $383.35. Twenty large boxes come to $634.85. The zone is confirmed when you book, and stairs or restricted access carry a handling fee quoted up front.
How long is the drive from Hampton to your office?
About 36 miles from the Hampton town offices. A route planner puts it at about 50 minutes: US 1 to I-95 south, I-495 south at the state line, then Route 38 in Tewksbury. Summer beach traffic and rush hour add time. Weekday mornings after 10 a.m., when our counter opens, are usually the easiest.
Is it worth driving two boxes from Hampton?
Usually yes. Two banker’s boxes weigh about 60 pounds, so the counter bill is about $59.40 plus $34.90 in fees, roughly $94.30. The same two boxes picked up would add $199.95. If you can spare a weekday morning, the drive saves money. If you cannot, a free community shred day may work for that small a load.
Can I just put shredded paper in my Hampton recycling cart?
Hampton’s Transfer Station page says clean, dry paper can be recycled whole or shredded, as long as shredded paper goes in a paper bag or cardboard box and never a plastic bag. That works for what you shred at home. It does not help with whole documents, which stay readable on the truck and sorting line.
Do I need to remove staples and folders?
No. Leave staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands and file folders in place. Do remove three-ring binder hardware and hanging-folder frames, and anything that is not paper. Hard drives, discs, tapes and USB sticks go in a separate bag, because media is physically destroyed and quoted per item rather than by weight.
Do I get proof that my files were destroyed?
Yes. Every job, drop-off, pickup or witnessed, comes with a Certificate of Destruction. It is covered by the $14.95 HIPAA filing fee that is part of the $34.90 per-job fees. Practices and businesses that handle patient health information can also ask for a Business Associate Agreement.
Can a Hampton dental office use the drop-off counter?
It can. Any practice can bring sealed boxes to the counter on a weekday, and we shred them the same business day with a Certificate of Destruction. Many practices still book a pickup for a large purge so staff stay in the office. We sign a Business Associate Agreement on request before the first job.
