Quick answer

The Salem NH to Tewksbury drop-off is about 15 miles: I-93 south from Exit 1 or Exit 2, I-495 south toward Lowell for about two miles, the Route 133 exit, North Street, then left onto Main Street (Route 38) to 1215 Main Street, Unit 115. It typically takes about 25 minutes outside rush hour. New Hampshire Document Shredding takes walk-ins Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 99 cents a pound plus $34.90 in per-job fees, so one banker’s box costs about $64.60.

Salem is the closest New Hampshire town to our counter

We shred at one place, our office on Route 38 in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. There is no drop box, kiosk or office of ours in Salem or anywhere else in New Hampshire. For most towns that makes the drive the main hurdle. For Salem it barely counts, because no New Hampshire town we serve sits closer to our door.

From Salem Town Hall on Geremonty Drive it is about 15 miles, nearly all of it highway. Salem Depot, where Route 28 meets Route 97, is about the same. That puts a whole drop-off, parking, unloading, weighing and paying, inside a long lunch break.

No appointment

Walk in Monday to Friday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. You don’t need an account or a booking. Bring the boxes, and we weigh them at the counter.

Shredded that day

Paper you drop off is shredded the same business day at our Tewksbury office. It doesn’t sit in a bin waiting for a truck.

Proof on paper

Every job comes with a Certificate of Destruction. It is covered by the $14.95 HIPAA filing fee, part of the $34.90 per-job fees.

This page covers the drive itself. If you want every option for Salem, including a Zone 1 pickup and witnessed sessions, start with our main page on shredding in Salem. If you want to know how the counter works for every customer, read about drop-off shredding.

The Salem NH to Tewksbury drop-off route, turn by turn

Two highways and two local roads get you here. Which I-93 ramp you use depends on where in Salem you start. From Town Hall or the Rockingham Park Boulevard side of town, use Exit 1. From Salem Depot, Main Street and the Route 97 side, Pelham Road to Exit 2 is quicker. After that, the route is identical.

Salem NH to 1215 Main Street, Tewksbury: I-93 south, I-495 south toward Lowell, Route 133 exit, North Street, Main Street. Route 28 heads into Methuen, Lawrence and Andover and is not a direct route. New Hampshire Massachusetts Route 28 south: Methuen, Lawrence, Andover Not a direct route Salem, I-93 Exit 1 or Exit 2 I-93 south about 6.5 miles in MA I-495 interchange I-495 south, about 2 mi Route 133 exit North Street, about 2.3 mi 1215 Main Street (Route 38), Unit 115 About 15 miles about 25 min, no traffic
Salem to our Tewksbury office: I-93 south, I-495 south toward Lowell, the Route 133 exit, North Street, then left on Main Street (Route 38). Route 28 runs the wrong way for this trip. Distances rounded.
  1. Get on I-93 south. From Town Hall, take Veterans Memorial Parkway to Rockingham Park Boulevard and Exit 1. From Salem Depot, head west on Main Street, which becomes Pelham Road, to Exit 2.
  2. Cross into Massachusetts. The state line comes almost right away. Stay on I-93 south for about six and a half miles to the I-495 interchange in Andover.
  3. Take I-495 south toward Lowell. Both directions of I-495 split off here, so follow the Lowell signs. You stay on for only about two miles.
  4. Exit at Route 133 for Tewksbury and Andover. Follow the ramp onto North Street and stay on it for about 2.3 miles to the end.
  5. Turn left on Main Street. That is Route 38. Our building is about half a mile along, at 1215 Main Street. Park out front for free.

That is the whole trip. Map apps sometimes offer the Route 38 exit off I-495 instead, which brings you down Main Street from the other direction. Both work, so follow whichever your map app prefers on the day. The North Street way is the one we give Salem customers on the phone.

Why Route 28 is not the road to Tewksbury

A lot of Salem people live and shop on Route 28, so it is natural to assume it leads here. It doesn’t. South of the state line, Route 28 runs through Methuen and downtown Lawrence and on into Andover. To reach Tewksbury from there you would have to cut west across Andover on Route 133 and work through local roads. The miles come out close, but the traffic lights and downtown Lawrence turn a 25-minute drive into something much slower and far less predictable.

So treat Route 28 as the road you take to get onto the highway, not the road you take to us. From the Route 28 plazas north of the Depot, Exit 2 is usually a few minutes away. From the south end of Broadway near the Methuen line, Exit 1 is close.

There is a genuine back road, if you want one. Route 38 starts near Rockingham Park Boulevard, runs through Pelham, Dracut and Lowell, and becomes our Main Street in Tewksbury. It is about 20 miles with plenty of lights, and it usually takes noticeably longer than the highway. Some customers like it because it is one road the whole way. We only suggest it when I-93 is jammed.

One more wrong turn to avoid. At the I-93 and I-495 interchange, the northbound side of I-495 heads toward Lawrence and Haverhill. If you see signs for those, you have taken the wrong ramp. Get off at the next exit and turn around. The Lowell direction is the one you want.

Timing the drive around rush hour

The route is easy. The clock is what makes it easy or annoying. I-93 south and I-495 both carry heavy commuter traffic on weekday mornings and again in the late afternoon. Our hours help here, because we open at 10 a.m., after the worst of the morning rush has usually thinned.

  • Best window: leave Salem a little before 10 a.m. and arrive as the counter opens
  • Next best: the middle of the day, between late morning and early afternoon
  • Avoid arriving close to 5 p.m. The counter closes then, and northbound traffic is building for the drive home
  • Commuters: if you already drive I-93 into Massachusetts, the boxes can ride along on a day you start late or leave early
  • We are closed on weekends for walk-in drop-off, so plan around a weekday

A drop-off itself is quick. Staff help you load the boxes onto a cart, we weigh them, you pay, and you leave with a receipt. Allow about an hour for the round trip from most of Salem, a little more if you stop for lunch in Tewksbury.

What a Salem NH to Tewksbury drop-off costs

You pay the same rates every customer pays, listed on our shredding rates page. Under 10 boxes we charge 99 cents a pound. At 10 boxes or more you can pay a flat $15 per small box or $20 per large banker’s box. Every job also carries $34.90 in per-job fees: $14.95 for the HIPAA filing that produces your certificate and $19.95 for recycling the shred.

Estimated drop-off totals for banker’s boxes at about 30 lb each, all including the $34.90 per-job fees. Ten boxes at the flat rate cost less than nine boxes by weight.

Look at the last two bars. Nine boxes by the pound cost more than ten boxes at the flat rate. If you are loading eight or nine boxes in Salem, find one more box of old paper before you leave. It saves you about $67 and clears another shelf.

The scale decides the final number. A box packed tight with file folders can weigh more than 30 pounds, and a half-full one less. Bags and loose paper are weighed the same way.

What to bring, and what to leave at home

You don’t need to sort the paper for us. Staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands and file folders can all stay in. The shredder handles them. What we do ask is that you pull out the few things that are not paper and would jam the machine or need a different process.

Old phones, hard drives, CDs, tapes and USB sticks are welcome too, in a separate bag. We physically destroy them and quote them per item at the counter. Our page on how to prepare documents for shredding has photos of what to pull.

  • Boxes or bags of paper, closed so nothing blows out in the parking lot
  • A rough count of boxes, so you can tell if you are close to the 10-box flat rate
  • The name you want on the Certificate of Destruction, especially for a business or an estate
  • Any drives, phones or discs in their own bag
  • Remove: three-ring binder hardware, the metal frames from hanging folders, and anything that is not paper

Before you load the car, check what you should keep. The IRS says most tax records need to be kept 3 years, 6 years if you left out income worth more than 25 percent of the gross income on your return, and 7 years if you claimed a loss on worthless securities or a bad debt deduction. Records tied to a house or other property are kept until the limitation period runs for the year you sell it. Our guide to how long to keep tax records goes through it in detail.

Cut the pile at the source while you are at it. Much of the paper people bring us is unsolicited credit and insurance offers. The FTC explains how to opt out of prescreened offers for five years or permanently through the credit bureaus’ official opt-out site. Requests are processed within days, though the FTC says it can take several weeks for the mail to stop.

When the drive isn’t worth it

For most Salem households, the drive wins. It is short, and the pickup fee would often cost more than the shredding itself. But there are three cases where we tell Salem callers to stay home.

Files you must see destroyedWitnessed session at our office$1.99 per pound, $100 minimum, plus $34.90

Salem is in our lowest pickup zone, Zone 1, at $129.95 per trip. On one box that fee is twice the shredding. On twenty boxes it is a fair trade for not loading a car three times. Our off-site shredding page explains how a pickup works, and the price assumes ground-level or elevator access.

Recycling is not the answer for paper with your name and account numbers on it. Salem’s transfer station on Shannon Road is for residents with a sticker, and it sorts newspaper and cardboard for recycling. That system is built to recycle paper, not to destroy what’s printed on it.

If you are clearing a Salem home, our page on Salem NH home shredding covers tax season, estates and cost per box. Offices along Broadway and Main Street should read our guide to Salem NH business shredding. And if you live just west of Salem, the route from shredding service in Pelham NH is nearly as short.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Salem NH to Tewksbury drop-off drive?

About 15 miles from Salem Town Hall, typically about 25 minutes outside rush hour. Take I-93 south from Exit 1 or Exit 2, I-495 south toward Lowell for about two miles, the Route 133 exit, North Street to the end, then left onto Main Street (Route 38) to 1215 Main Street, Unit 115.

Can I take Route 28 from Salem to Tewksbury?

You can, but it is not a direct route. Route 28 runs south through Methuen, downtown Lawrence and Andover, and you would then have to cut west to Tewksbury on Route 133 and local roads. The miles are similar, but the lights and city traffic make it slower and less predictable than I-93 and I-495.

Do I need an appointment to drop off in Tewksbury?

No. Drop-off is walk-in, Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We weigh your boxes at the counter, you pay 99 cents a pound, or $15 and $20 per box at 10 or more, and the paper is shredded the same business day. Witnessed sessions and pickups do need an appointment.

When is the best time to drive down from Salem?

Leave a little before 10 a.m. so you arrive as we open, after the worst of the morning commute on I-93 and I-495. Late morning and early afternoon also work well. Avoid arriving close to 5 p.m., when the counter closes and northbound traffic builds. Walk-in drop-off is weekdays only.

How much does one box cost to drop off?

A banker’s box of paper weighs about 30 pounds, so the shredding is about $29.70 at 99 cents a pound. Every job adds $34.90 in per-job fees, which cover the Certificate of Destruction paperwork and recycling the shred. One box comes to roughly $64.60. The scale at the counter sets the final number.

Do I have to remove staples and folders first?

No. Leave staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands and file folders in. Please remove three-ring binder hardware, the metal frames from hanging folders, and anything that isn’t paper. Put hard drives, phones and discs in a separate bag. We physically destroy them and quote them per item.

Is there a shredding drop box in Salem NH?

Not one of ours. We shred at one place, our office at 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, Tewksbury, MA. We have no office, kiosk or drop box in Salem or anywhere in New Hampshire. Salem customers either drive about 15 miles to our counter or book a Zone 1 pickup for $129.95 plus the shredding rate.

Is it cheaper to bring 10 boxes than 9?

Usually. Nine banker’s boxes priced by the pound come to about $267.30 before fees. Ten boxes at the $20 flat rate are $200 before fees. With the $34.90 per-job fees, that is about $302.20 for nine and $234.90 for ten. If you are close to ten, bring the extra box.
