Quick answer

For Derry NH home shredding, New Hampshire Document Shredding charges 99 cents a pound at our drop-off at 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, Tewksbury, MA, plus $34.90 in per-job fees. One banker’s box costs about $64.60, three boxes about $124.00, and ten boxes $234.90, so the cost per box falls from $64.60 to $23.49 as the pile grows. What Derry NH home shredding usually covers

Most Derry households don’t come to us with a plan. They come with a box they found in the basement, a drawer that won’t close, or a parent’s files after a move. The paper is almost always the same mix. Anything printed with your name next to a number, an account, a birth date or a signature belongs in the shredder, not the blue bin.

Money paper

Bank and credit card statements, cancelled checks, loan papers for a car you sold years ago, and brokerage statements you can now download.

Tax paper

Returns and the receipts behind them, W-2s, 1099s and pay stubs, once they are past the keeping periods below.

Medical paper

Explanation of benefits letters, bills, pharmacy printouts and insurance cards. They carry member numbers and diagnoses.

Mail you never asked for

Prescreened credit and insurance offers, convenience checks and anything with a barcode tied to your name.

Sort before you box anything. Three piles work best on a kitchen table: keep, shred and recycle. Catalogs, plain envelopes, newspapers and flyers go straight to recycling. Only the paper with personal details needs to come to us, and that cuts the weight you pay for. If you are unsure where to start, our guide on what documents to shred ranks them by risk.

You can also slow the flow. The FTC explains how to opt out of prescreened credit and insurance offers for five years, or permanently, through the credit bureaus’ official opt-out site. It can take several weeks for the offers to stop, but after that the junk drawer fills more slowly.

What to keep before you shred

The fastest way to regret a shredding trip is to shred a return you still needed. The IRS keeps its guidance fairly simple, and it covers most of what a Derry household holds. Check these periods before anything goes in a box.

RecordIRS guidance on keeping itThen
Most income tax records3 yearsShred
Returns where you left out income worth more than 25 percent of the gross income shown6 yearsShred

Employment tax records, if you employ a nanny or caregiverAt least 4 years after the tax is due or paidShred
Records connected to your house or other propertyUntil the limitation period runs for the year you sell itThen shred
No return filed, or a fraudulent returnKeep indefinitelyKeep

Property records trip up a lot of Derry homeowners. Receipts for a new roof, a finished basement or an addition can affect your gain when you sell the house, so they stay until that sale is well behind you. The IRS also suggests keeping copies of the returns themselves, since they help with future returns and amendments. Our guide to how long to keep tax records goes into the edge cases.

Statements are simpler. Once a bank or card statement has been checked and nothing on it relates to taxes or a dispute, most people have no reason to keep the paper copy. That is often the biggest pile in the house.

Derry NH home shredding cost per box

We charge by weight under 10 boxes and by the box at 10 or more. A standard banker’s box of paper weighs about 30 pounds. Every job adds two fixed fees: $14.95 for the HIPAA filing that produces your Certificate of Destruction and $19.95 for recycling the shred, $34.90 in all. Those fixed fees are why the cost per box drops so fast as the pile grows.

Estimated drop-off cost per banker’s box at about 30 lb each, including the $34.90 per-job fees, rounded to the cent. The scale at the counter sets the final number.

Two things jump out. The first box is the expensive one, because it carries all of the fixed fees by itself. And the jump from nine boxes to ten saves money outright: nine boxes by weight come to about $302.20 with fees, while ten boxes at the flat rate are $234.90. If you are close, fill one more box.

Counter tip: wait and batch. One trip with five boxes costs $183.40. Five separate trips with one box each would cost $323.00, because the $34.90 in fees comes with every job. For a household, once a year is plenty.

Home offices in Derry

A lot of Derry homes now have a desk that is really a small office. Some of that paper is yours, and some belongs to an employer or a client. That distinction matters before anything goes in a box.

If you work remotely, read your employer’s policy on printed records first. Many employers want work paper returned or destroyed a particular way, and some want a certificate. If you run a side business from home, client files with Social Security numbers, account numbers or health details deserve the same care a downtown office would give them. Tax preparers working from home are covered by the GLBA Safeguards Rule, 16 CFR Part 314.

Our drop-off gives you a Certificate of Destruction for every job, with the name you choose on it. That is a simple way to show a client or an employer what happened to their paper. Our page on home office shredding covers employer rules and cheap ways to keep a home office clear.

A home office fills a box faster than you think. Batch it and bring it down once.
  • Keep work paper and household paper in separate boxes, so the certificate can name the right owner
  • Leave staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands and file folders in
  • Remove three-ring binder hardware, hanging-folder frames and anything that isn’t paper
  • Put old laptops, hard drives, phones and USB sticks in a separate bag for a per-item quote

Old computers are worth a word. The Derry transfer station charges a fee to take computers and monitors, and the drive inside still holds whatever you saved on it. We physically destroy drives and quote them per item, and our hard drive destruction page explains what we take.

The drive down I-93 from Derry

We shred at one place, our office on Route 38 in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. We have no office or drop box in Derry or anywhere else in New Hampshire. The good news is that the drive is nearly all highway, and the last few miles are easy.

  1. Head west on Route 102. From the Municipal Center on Manning Street, take East Broadway (Route 102) west. It becomes Nashua Road and reaches I-93 at Exit 4 in Londonderry.
  2. Take I-93 south toward Salem and Boston. Stay on it for about 17 miles, past Windham and Salem and across the state line.
  3. Take I-495 south toward Lowell. At the big interchange in Andover, follow the Lowell signs and stay on I-495 for about two miles.
  4. Exit at Route 133 for Tewksbury and Andover. Follow North Street about 2.3 miles to the end.
  5. Turn left on Main Street. That is Route 38. We are about half a mile along at 1215 Main Street. Parking is free, and staff help you unload.

Time it around the commute. I-93 south fills with Massachusetts-bound traffic on weekday mornings, and the late afternoon is heavy in the other direction. We open at 10 a.m., so a late-morning start from Derry usually means an easy run. For more on the route and planning one trip, see our guide to the Derry to Tewksbury drop-off.

What Derry’s transfer station does with paper

Derry runs its transfer station at 43 Transfer Lane, off Fordway. It is open Tuesday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and closed Sunday and Monday. The town calls itself a recycling community, recycling is mandatory there, and only household trash from Derry residents is accepted.

Paper has its own bay. The town’s guidelines list mixed paper as junk mail, newspaper and magazines, sorted apart from cardboard, plastics, cans and glass. That is the right place for catalogs and flyers. It is not where a bank statement or an old tax return should go, because recycling is designed to reuse paper, not to destroy what’s printed on it.

If you shred at home, the town’s guidelines don’t mention shredded paper, so ask the attendant where shreds belong before you bring a bag. For more than a few envelopes a week, a home machine gets slow fast, and our counter takes staples and folders that would jam it.

Derry’s Municipal Center is at 14 Manning Street, and the town site posts transfer station holiday closures through the year. Free shred days are sometimes hosted around southern New Hampshire by banks, credit unions and community groups. We describe how to find them on our page about shred events. They are a good deal if the timing works, and our counter is there the rest of the year.

When a pickup beats the drive

For two or three boxes, drive. The pickup fee would cost more than the shredding. Pickup earns its place when the boxes outnumber the people who can carry them, or when the job is a whole house rather than a closet.

Our three zone fees are $129.95, $159.95 and $199.95, and we confirm which one applies to your Derry address when you book. Every pickup needs an appointment, and we never promise same-day service. Our off-site shredding page explains the process.

Executors clearing a parent’s house should also read our page on shredding after a death before they box anything. The statewide view of household options is on our residential shredding page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Derry NH home shredding cost per box?

At our Tewksbury drop-off, one banker’s box costs about $64.60 including the $34.90 per-job fees. Three boxes cost about $124.00, or about $41.33 each. Ten large boxes at the $20 flat rate cost $234.90, or $23.49 each. The fixed fees are spread over more boxes as the job grows.

How long is the drive from Derry to your office?

About 25 miles from the Derry Municipal Center, typically 35 to 40 minutes outside rush hour. Take Route 102 to I-93 Exit 4, I-93 south about 17 miles, I-495 south toward Lowell, the Route 133 exit, North Street to the end, then left onto Main Street (Route 38).

Do you have a drop-off location in Derry?

No. We shred at one place, our office at 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, Tewksbury, MA. We have no office, kiosk or drop box in Derry or anywhere in New Hampshire. Derry households either drive down I-93, which takes most people well under an hour, or book a pickup with the zone confirmed at booking.

Which pickup zone is Derry in?

We confirm the zone for your exact Derry address when you book. Our zone fees are $129.95, $159.95 and $199.95 per pickup, on top of the normal shredding rates and the $34.90 per-job fees. For a household with a few boxes, the drive to Tewksbury is almost always cheaper.

How long should I keep tax returns before shredding them?

The IRS says most records need 3 years, 6 years if you left out income worth more than 25 percent of the gross income on the return, and 7 years for a worthless securities or bad debt claim. Keep property records until the limitation period runs for the year you sell. Keep everything if you never filed.

Can I recycle bank statements at the Derry transfer station?

Derry’s transfer station has a mixed paper bay for junk mail, newspaper and magazines. Recycling reuses paper but doesn’t destroy what’s printed on it, so statements, tax returns and medical bills should be shredded first. The town’s guidelines don’t mention shredded paper, so ask the attendant before you bring shreds.

Do I need to remove staples and folders?

No. Leave staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands and file folders in. Please remove three-ring binder hardware, the metal frames from hanging folders, and anything that is not paper. Bag old phones, drives and USB sticks separately. We physically destroy them and quote them per item.

Can I get a certificate for my home office paper?

Yes. Every job, including a single box from a Derry home office, comes with a Certificate of Destruction. It is covered by the $14.95 HIPAA filing fee within the $34.90 per-job fees. Tell us the name you want on it, yours, your business or your employer’s, when you check in at the counter.
