Residential shredding cost in NH: every option side by side
Residential shredding cost depends mostly on how your paper reaches the shredder. Here is what a New Hampshire household really pays to drive it to our Tewksbury counter, book a pickup, watch it shredded, wait for a free event or run a shredder at home, with worked examples for each amount.
99¢ per pound at our Tewksbury drop-off. Certificate of Destruction on every job.

Quick answer
Residential shredding cost at New Hampshire Document Shredding is 99 cents per pound plus $34.90 in per-job fees, so one 30-pound banker’s box costs $64.60 at our Tewksbury drop-off and five boxes cost $183.40. A pickup adds $129.95 (Zone 1), $159.95 (Zone 2) or $199.95 (Zone 3), and witnessed shredding is $1.99 per pound with a $100 minimum plus the same fees. Free community shred days cost nothing but come with limits and dates you do not control. For the full picture of the service itself, see our residential shredding page.
What goes into residential shredding cost
A household shredding bill has at most three parts. Once you know them, you can price any job in your head on the drive down Route 38.
The shredding charge
99 cents per pound under 10 boxes. At 10 boxes or more, flat box pricing applies: $15 per small box and $20 per large banker’s box. Witnessed shredding is $1.99 per pound with a $100 minimum on the shredding charge.
The per-job fees
$34.90 on every job: a $14.95 HIPAA filing fee that covers the Certificate of Destruction paperwork and a $19.95 environmental fee that covers recycling the shred. Charged once per job, not per box.
Transportation, if we pick up
$129.95 for Zone 1, $159.95 for Zone 2 and $199.95 for Zone 3. Prices assume ground-level or elevator access. Stairs or restricted access add a handling fee, quoted up front.
There is no contract, no monthly charge and no minimum at the drop-off counter. A shoebox of old statements is priced the same way as a car full of file boxes: by the pound on our scale. A standard banker’s box of paper weighs about 30 pounds, which is the number all the examples below use.
Drop-off: the lowest residential shredding cost
Drop-off means you carry the boxes into 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, Tewksbury, on a weekday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. No appointment. Staff help you unload, the paper is weighed at the counter and it is shredded at our office the same business day. From the Salem or Pelham line it is about a 15-minute drive via I-93 or Route 38.
| What you bring | Shredding charge | Per-job fees | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 banker’s box (about 30 lb) | $29.70 | $34.90 | $64.60 |
| 2 banker’s boxes (about 60 lb) | $59.40 | $34.90 | $94.30 |
| 3 banker’s boxes (about 90 lb) | $89.10 | $34.90 | $124.00 |
| 5 banker’s boxes (about 150 lb) | $148.50 | $34.90 | $183.40 |
| 10 small boxes (flat $15 each) | $150.00 | $34.90 | $184.90 |
| 10 banker’s boxes (flat $20 each) | $200.00 | $34.90 | $234.90 |
| 20 banker’s boxes (flat $20 each) | $400.00 | $34.90 | $434.90 |
Count your boxes before you come. Under 10 boxes the scale sets the price, and at 10 the flat box rate starts. Seven to nine full banker’s boxes priced by the pound come to roughly $242.80 to $302.20, which is more than ten boxes at the flat rate. If you are close to ten, say so when you call or book.
Drop-off is also the fastest route. Paper that reaches our counter is cross-cut the same business day, and the Certificate of Destruction is issued for the job. Our drop-off shredding page has the parking and unloading details.
Pickup cost by zone
Off-site pickup costs the same per pound or per box as drop-off. You add one transportation fee for your zone, and our driver brings the boxes to our Tewksbury office, where they are shredded after they arrive. There is no shredder at your curb.
| Boxes | Zone 1 ($129.95) | Zone 2 ($159.95) | Zone 3 ($199.95) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 banker’s box | $194.55 | $224.55 | $264.55 |
| 5 banker’s boxes | $313.35 | $343.35 | $383.35 |
| 10 banker’s boxes | $364.85 | $394.85 | $434.85 |
| 20 banker’s boxes | $564.85 | $594.85 | $634.85 |
Which zone you are in
Zone 1 covers the Tewksbury area and the New Hampshire border towns such as Salem, Pelham, Windham and Plaistow. Zone 2 covers greater Nashua and Manchester. Zone 3 covers the Seacoast and points farther north. Other towns get their zone confirmed when you book.
Stairs and access
Our zone prices assume the driver can reach the boxes at ground level or by elevator. If they are in an attic, a second floor walk-up or behind a gate, a handling fee applies and is quoted before the visit. Carrying the boxes to the garage first avoids it.
Pickup makes sense when the boxes outnumber the people who can carry them, or when the drive would take a whole afternoon. Our off-site shredding page explains the booking, and our post on pickup cost by distance covers the zone map in more detail.
Residential shredding cost side by side
Put drop-off and the three pickup zones on one chart and the pattern jumps out. For small jobs, the transportation fee is bigger than the paper. For big jobs, it fades into the total.
That is why our advice changes with volume. One or two boxes: drive. Five boxes: drive if you can lift them, book a pickup if you cannot. Twenty boxes from an attic in Portsmouth: book the pickup without guilt, because the fee is a small slice of the job and it saves a back.

Witnessed shredding: what watching costs
Some households want to see it happen. An executor clearing a parent’s financial files, a family settling a divorce, or anyone who simply sleeps better after watching the paper go in. Witnessed sessions are booked by appointment at our Tewksbury office, and the certificate is signed in front of you.
| Amount | Shredding charge at $1.99 per lb | Total with $34.90 fees |
|---|---|---|
| 1 banker’s box (about 30 lb) | $59.70, raised to the $100 minimum | $134.90 |
| 2 banker’s boxes (about 60 lb) | $119.40 | $154.30 |
| 3 banker’s boxes (about 90 lb) | $179.10 | $214.00 |
| 5 banker’s boxes (about 150 lb) | $298.50 | $333.40 |
The $100 minimum covers roughly the first 50 pounds, so witnessing a single box costs about twice the drop-off price. For a box or two of truly sensitive paper, many people find that worth it. For a garage full of old utility bills, it is not. Read more on our witnessed shredding page.
Free shred events: the cost you do not see on a receipt
Towns, banks and credit unions around southern New Hampshire run free community shred days, usually a few times a year. If one lands on a weekend that suits you and you have a box or two, it is a fine option. We would tell a neighbor the same thing.
Free still has costs. Events tend to set a box limit per car, close early when the truck fills, and run on one date you did not choose. You may wait in a line of cars, and you usually leave without paperwork showing what happened to your box. The FTC itself suggests a local shred day for households without a shredder, so it is a recognized route, just not a flexible one.
When an event is the right call
One or two boxes, no deadline, and the date works. You confirm the box limit and rules with the host before you go. Our page on shred events explains how to find the next one and what they will not take.
When it is not
A backlog bigger than the limit, a move or an estate with a closing date, or paper you want a certificate for. Then the $64.60 per box at drop-off is the predictable choice, any weekday of the year.
Home shredder cost, counted honestly
Buying a home shredder looks cheap because you pay once. The real cost shows up later in bags, oil, jams, replacement machines and, above all, your time. We will not quote machine prices here, because they change constantly, but the time math is easy to run yourself.
Here is a worked example, not a measurement. A 30-pound banker’s box holds something like 3,000 sheets, since a 500-sheet ream weighs about 5 pounds. If your machine takes 8 sheets a pass, that is about 375 passes, plus cool-down breaks, bag changes and pulled staples if your model cannot take them. Put your own hourly value on that afternoon and compare it with $64.60.
For a few pages a week, a decent home machine is the right tool. For a backlog, most people give up halfway. Our post on home shredder cost adds up the yearly running costs, and our guide on choosing a home paper shredder covers cross-cut versus strip-cut.
Four worked examples from New Hampshire households
These are illustrations built from our price list, not real customers. Each assumes full banker’s boxes at about 30 pounds and the zones on our rate sheet. Your total is set by the actual weight on our scale.
Salem, 3 boxes
A retired couple with three boxes of old statements. They drive 15 minutes down I-93: $124.00. A Zone 1 pickup of the same boxes would be $253.95.
Nashua, 1 box a year
One family that shreds once a year after tax season. Drop-off: $64.60. A Zone 2 pickup: $224.55. The drive pays for itself many times over.
Manchester, 2 boxes
Two boxes of old personal files from a home office. Drop-off: $94.30. Zone 2 pickup: $254.25. Witnessed: $154.30.
Portsmouth estate, 20 boxes
An executor emptying a house on the Seacoast. Zone 3 pickup: $634.85. Driving them down: $434.90, if you have a vehicle for about 600 pounds of paper.
If the estate example sounds familiar, our guide on shredding after a death covers what to keep and what to shred first. To estimate your own pounds before you call, our post on how much paper a household shreds walks through it.
How to lower your residential shredding cost
The price list is short, so the savings come from how you use it. Five habits do most of the work.
- Batch into one jobThe $34.90 per-job fees are charged once per job. One trip with three boxes costs $124.00. Three trips with one box each cost $193.80.
- Sort out what you must keepEvery pound of paper you still need is a pound you pay to destroy. Pull current tax years, deeds, titles and active account paperwork first.
- Leave the staples inYou do not need to remove staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands or file folders. Only pull binder hardware, hanging-folder frames and anything that is not paper.
- Drive if you can lift itFor under five boxes, the transportation fee is usually bigger than the shredding charge. A weekday trip saves $129.95 or more.
- Bring boxes to ground level for a pickupIf you do book a pickup, stage the boxes in the garage or by the front door so no stair handling fee applies.

Frequently asked questions
How much does residential shredding cost per box?
At our Tewksbury drop-off, a 30-pound banker’s box costs $29.70 to shred at 99 cents per pound, plus $34.90 in per-job fees, for $64.60 in total. The fees are charged once per job, so each extra box adds only about $29.70. At 10 boxes or more, the flat rate is $20 per banker’s box or $15 per small box.
What are the $34.90 per-job fees for?
Every job carries a $14.95 HIPAA filing fee, which covers the Certificate of Destruction paperwork, and a $19.95 environmental fee, which covers recycling the shredded paper. Together they are $34.90 per job, whether you bring one box or twenty. That is why one trip with all your boxes costs less than several small trips.
How much does a shredding pickup cost for a house?
A pickup costs the same per pound or per box as drop-off, plus a transportation fee by zone: $129.95 in Zone 1, $159.95 in Zone 2 and $199.95 in Zone 3, plus the $34.90 per-job fees. One box picked up in Zone 1 costs $194.55. Stairs or restricted access add a handling fee quoted up front.
Is a free shred event cheaper than paying?
In dollars, yes. Community shred days run by towns, banks and credit unions are free, but they usually limit boxes per car, run on one date and may close early. If your pile is bigger than the limit or you need it gone by a set date, paying 99 cents a pound at a weekday drop-off is the predictable option.
Is it cheaper to buy a home shredder?
For a few pages a week, often yes. For a backlog, usually not once you count your time. A 30-pound box is roughly 3,000 sheets, which means hundreds of passes through a typical home machine, plus bags and jams. Compare that afternoon with $64.60 at our drop-off, and keep the machine for weekly mail.
How much does witnessed shredding cost for one box?
Witnessed shredding is $1.99 per pound with a $100 minimum on the shredding charge, plus $34.90 in per-job fees. One 30-pound box would be $59.70 at the per-pound rate, so the $100 minimum applies and the total is $134.90. Two boxes at about 60 pounds come to $154.30.
Which pickup zone is my New Hampshire town in?
Zone 1 covers the border towns such as Salem, Pelham, Windham and Plaistow. Zone 2 covers greater Nashua and Manchester. Zone 3 covers the Seacoast and points farther north. If your town is not listed, the zone is confirmed when you book online or call (978) 636-0301.
Do I pay extra for staples or folders?
No. You do not need to remove staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands or file folders, and there is no extra charge for them. Do remove three-ring binder hardware, hanging-folder frames and anything that is not paper. Hard drives, CDs and phones go in a separate bag and are quoted per item.
