This is the full home shredder cost, line by line: the machine, oil, bags, electricity and the hours you spend feeding it, priced from real retail listings this month. Then we set it beside paying 99 cents a pound at our Tewksbury counter, so you can see which one fits your house.

Quick answer

Home shredder cost, part one: the machine
We checked shredder listings at two big retailers, Staples and Walmart, on November 5, 2026. Prices move every week with sales, so treat the ranges below as a snapshot, not a quote. What they do show is where each class of machine sits.
The cheapest shredders cut fewer sheets at a time and need longer rests. Paying more buys more sheets per pass, longer run times and a bigger bin. It does not buy a machine that never wears out.

Two details matter more than the sticker. The first is the run time. The $59 Pen+Gear 12-sheet listing at Walmart says it runs 7 minutes continuously and then needs a 30-minute cool-down. The $135.29 Fellowes 12C listing at Staples says it runs up to 10 minutes before it needs a rest. That rest is where your afternoon goes.
The second is the cut. A cross-cut machine turns a page into short strips. Micro-cut machines make smaller pieces and usually cost more. How long will it last? No retailer listing we saw promised a lifespan, so we do not print one. In the worksheet below we use three years as a round number. If your last shredder died in eighteen months, use that instead.
Oil, bags and lubricant sheets
Every cross-cut shredder wants oil. The cutters are packed tight, and paper dust dries them out. A dry machine slows down, jams more and heats up sooner. Most manuals ask you to oil the blades every time you empty the bin or after a set number of minutes.
Shredder oil
A 12 to 16 ounce bottle listed at $10.19 and $11.69 at Staples and $11.55 and $12.88 at Walmart. Call it about $10 to $13 a bottle. A light home user may stretch one bottle over a year.
Lubricant sheets
The no-mess option: you feed an oiled sheet through like paper. Staples listed 24 sheets for $14.29 and Walmart listed 25 for $14.99. That is roughly 60 cents every time you oil.
Bin bags
Staples listed a box of 16 bags for a 15.8-gallon bin at $13.99, about 87 cents a bag. Many people skip bags and dump the bin, which works until the static and the dust reach the floor.
Then there is where the shreds go. Loose shredded paper is light, bulky and messy, and recycling rules for it differ from town to town in New Hampshire. Some programs want it bagged, some do not want it in the single-stream cart at all. Check your own town’s recycling page before you fill the bin with confetti.
For the worksheet we use one bottle of oil ($11.55) and one 16-pack of bags ($13.99) per year, for a total of $25.54. Above about 100 pounds a year, add roughly 26 cents for every extra pound.
Electricity: the smallest line on the bill
Power is the line people worry about and the one that matters least. A home shredder only draws real power while the cutters turn, and most of its life it sits idle. The U.S. Energy Information Administration put the average New Hampshire residential price at 27.64 cents per kilowatt-hour in August 2026, a preliminary figure.
The math is short. Read the watts on the label of your machine, multiply by the hours it actually runs in a year, divide by 1,000 and multiply by 27.64 cents. A machine that drew 500 watts for 5 hours of cutting would use 2.5 kilowatt-hours, which is about 69 cents.
So leave the power line at a dollar or two and move on. The shredder that costs you money is the one you replaced twice, not the one you left plugged in.
Your time: the line nobody prices
Here is the arithmetic retailers leave out. Ordinary copy paper is 20-pound bond, which means 500 sheets at the large 17 by 22 inch size weigh 20 pounds. A letter sheet is a quarter of that size, so a ream of 500 letter sheets weighs about 5 pounds. That is about 100 sheets per pound.
Now picture one banker’s box on that $59 machine. Say you keep up a 10-sheet pass every 10 seconds, which is about 60 sheets a minute. A 7-minute run then handles about 420 sheets, a little over 4 pounds. Then the machine rests for 30 minutes.
A 30-pound box needs about seven of those runs. That is roughly 50 minutes of feeding spread over four hours or more of waiting, not counting jams, pulling binder clips or emptying the bin. In the worksheet we round the hands-on part to 2 minutes per pound.
What that time is worth is your call. Some people like a podcast and a slow evening at the shredder. Others would pay to never see a paper jam again. We show two example values, $15 and $30 an hour, so you can pick the one closer to you.
The yearly home shredder cost, added up
Put the lines together and a pattern shows. In year one you pay for the machine and a year of supplies. After that, if the machine survives, you pay only supplies and time. The chart below compares that first-year cash outlay with what the same household would pay to drop paper off at our counter in a single trip.
Spread the machine over three years and the yearly cash cost looks like this: about $39 for a small machine on sale, about $45 for the $59 12-sheet model and about $71 for the $135.29 model. Those are honest, low numbers. For a household that shreds a shoebox of mail a month, a home shredder is cheap in dollars.
The picture changes when you add time. At 2 minutes per pound, 50 pounds a year is about an hour and forty minutes at the machine. At 100 pounds it is over three hours, plus the waiting. At $30 an hour, those 100 pounds carry about $100 of your time on top of the $45 in cash.

Every house is different. A retired couple with one bank account and a pension statement shreds far less than a family running a home business from the spare room. Five lines are all you need.
- Machine per yearTake the price you paid or plan to pay and divide it by the years you expect it to last. A $59 machine over three years is $19.67 a year.

Paying by the pound instead of owning a shredder
At our counter the math has two parts. Paper is 99 cents a pound under 10 boxes, and $15 per small box or $20 per large banker’s box once you bring 10 or more. Every job then adds $34.90: a $14.95 HIPAA filing fee for the Certificate of Destruction paperwork and a $19.95 environmental fee for recycling the shred.

What the price includes
You hand the boxes over at 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, Tewksbury. Staff weigh them and the paper is cross-cut shredded at the office the same business day. You leave with a Certificate of Destruction, and all of the shred is recycled. You do not pull staples or paper clips first.
What it does not include
Your drive. From the Salem or Pelham line it is about 15 minutes down I-93 or Route 38. From farther north it is longer. The drop-off details, hours and parking are on our drop-off shredding page.
The $34.90 is charged once per job, so the cheapest way to use a service is to batch. Let the boxes collect in a closet for a year, then make one trip. A house that brings 50 pounds once a year pays $84.40. The same 50 pounds split into four trips would pay the fees four times.

When a home shredder is the right call, and when it is not
We run a shredding counter, and we will still tell you a home shredder makes sense for plenty of New Hampshire households. The question is what you feed it.
Keep one for the daily trickle
Pre-approved credit offers, a receipt with a card number, a pharmacy printout. A small cross-cut machine by the mail pile handles a few sheets a day without a thought.
Skip it for the annual purge
Seven years of tax backup or a filing cabinet you are finally clearing is several thousand sheets. A machine that runs 7 minutes and rests 30 turns that into a weekend.
Skip it for an estate
Clearing a parent’s house can mean 10 or more boxes at once. At that size the flat $20 box rate applies and the counter wins easily on time and cost.
Skip it when proof matters
A landlord, executor or home-based bookkeeper may need to show what was destroyed. A home shredder gives you a full bin. A drop-off gives you a Certificate of Destruction.
Many households do both: a cheap machine for the weekly mail and one drop-off a year for the deep clean. That combination keeps the machine’s workload light, so it lasts longer, and keeps the per-job fee to once a year. If you are not sure which papers are worth shredding at all, the FTC’s advice is short and blunt: when you get rid of documents with personal information, shred them before you throw them away.

Usually not. A heavy-duty machine listed at $249.99 to $384.39 costs more than shredding 10 banker’s boxes at our counter, which is $234.90 including the per-job fees. Unless you will keep shredding large volumes every year, buy a small machine for daily mail and bring the big batch in once.
