The Manchester to Tewksbury drop-off route on I-93

This page is for one job: getting your boxes from Manchester to our counter in a single, well-timed trip. If you are still deciding between driving and a pickup, or you run an office in the Millyard, our main page on shredding in Manchester covers every option. Here we stay on the road.

The drive is almost all interstate. From Manchester City Hall on Elm Street, our routing check in November 2026 came to about 35 miles and roughly 50 minutes with light traffic. You spend about 24 of those miles on I-93 South, crossing Londonderry, Windham and Salem before the Massachusetts line.

Manchester City Hall to our Tewksbury office. Distances are rounded from a November 2026 routing check. Exit 92 for Route 38 is a simpler alternative with a little more Main Street driving.
  1. Get onto I-93 South. From downtown and the Millyard, I-293 is the usual way onto I-93. Our routing check went down Elm Street and South Willow Street to the I-293 ramp, which then joins I-93 South below the city.
  2. Ride I-93 South into Massachusetts. This is the long stretch, about 24 miles through Londonderry, Windham and Salem and across the state line into Methuen and Andover. Stay in the through lanes past the Salem exits.
  3. Take I-495 South toward Lowell. At the big interchange in Andover, follow I-495 South. You are on it for only about two miles before your exit.
  4. Exit at 94 for Route 133. The signs read Tewksbury and Andover. From the ramp, follow the local road a short way to North Street and take North Street south about 2.3 miles to Main Street.
  5. Finish on Main Street. North Street ends at Main Street, which is Route 38. Our building at 1215 Main Street is less than half a mile along. Park out front and come in.

If you prefer fewer turns, stay on I-495 a little longer to exit 92 for Route 38 and follow Main Street toward Tewksbury center for about 2.6 miles. Both routes end at the same door, and the time difference is small. Set your phone’s map to 1215 Main Street, Tewksbury, MA 01876 and let it pick on the day.

Manchester to Tewksbury drop-off time by hour of the day

The distance never changes. The clock does. The 50-minute figure is for light traffic, and I-93 between Manchester and the I-495 junction is a commuter road for a big part of southern New Hampshire. When you leave matters more than which exit you take.

We cannot give you a minute count for every hour, and we would not trust anyone who did. What we can tell you is how each window lines up with our counter hours and the usual commuting pattern. Check a live map before you go. New England 511 covers the New Hampshire side and Mass 511 covers Massachusetts.

Leave ManchesterWhat to expect on the roadAt our counter
Before 9 a.m.Southbound morning commute, usually the slowest window into MassachusettsYou would arrive before we open at 10 a.m.
9 to 10 a.m.Rush easing, closer to the light-traffic time the later you leaveYou pull in around or soon after opening
10 to 11:30 a.m.Usually the easiest run of the dayOur pick. Plenty of the day left
11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.Midday, generally steadyGood. Plan lunch in Tewksbury or on the way home
2 to 3:30 p.m.Fine going south, but your drive home meets the evening build-upFine, still well before 5 p.m.
After 3:30 p.m.Evening commute on I-495 and I-93 North, slowest trip homeRisky. Walk-ins close at 5 p.m.

Our advice for most Manchester customers: leave between about 9:15 and 11 on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. You miss the morning rush, you reach the counter with time to spare, and you are back on I-93 North long before the afternoon traffic. Mondays and Fridays work too. Any weekday does, as long as you watch the clock on the way home.

Two timing traps catch people every year. The first is leaving at 3:45 with a full trunk and meeting the evening build-up near the I-495 junction, then reaching our door just as the counter closes at 5 p.m. The second is arriving before we open. Our walk-in hours start at 10 a.m., so an early start only buys you time in the parking lot.

If you commute south anyway, the trip can ride along with your workday. Someone who drives toward Andover, Lowell or Boston can load the trunk the night before and stop on the way in after 10 a.m. or on the way home before 5 p.m. That turns the round trip from Manchester into a short detour off I-495.

Weather is the other variable. A snowy morning on I-93 can stretch the drive a long way. Paper does not spoil, so if the forecast is bad, move the trip a day. Nothing at our counter needs an appointment, so changing your plan costs you nothing.

Parking and what happens at the counter

Our office is at 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, on Route 38 in Tewksbury. Parking is free, right in front of the building. Tell us at the door that you have boxes in the car and a staff member will help you unload them onto a cart. You do not need to carry anything heavy inside.

At the counter, we weigh the boxes and you pay. Under 10 boxes the price is 99 cents a pound. At 10 or more it switches to a flat $15 per small box and $20 per large banker’s box. Every job adds $14.95 for the HIPAA filing that produces your certificate and $19.95 for recycling the shred.

A staff member helps a customer roll a cart of file boxes from a parked car to a storefront entrance
Free parking out front, and help unloading the car.

Then you are done. Paper dropped off at the counter is shredded the same business day at our office, cross-cut, and every scrap of it goes to be recycled. You leave with a Certificate of Destruction, which records that your material was destroyed. Most Manchester customers spend more time finding a parking space at the supermarket than they spend inside with us.

No account or booking is needed for a walk-in. If you would rather watch your own files go through the shredder, that is a witnessed session, which is booked ahead and costs $1.99 a pound with a $100 job minimum plus the $34.90 per-job fees. Our page on witnessed shredding explains how that appointment works.

What to bring from Manchester, and what to leave at home

The fastest drop-offs are the ones where the boxes are ready to go on the scale the moment they come out of the car. A few minutes of prep in Manchester saves time at our counter and keeps the bill down, because you pay by the pound for anything under 10 boxes.

Bring

Your boxes or paper bags of documents, lids on. The name you want on the certificate. A way to pay. If you are dropping off for a business, a note of how many boxes came from which department helps your own records.

Leave in

Staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands and file folders. You do not need to strip any of them. Our shredding handles them, and pulling staples from ten years of statements is a waste of your weekend.

Take out

Three-ring binder hardware, metal frames from hanging folders, and anything that is not paper. Hard drives, phones, discs and USB sticks go in a separate bag. They are physically destroyed and quoted per item.

Use boxes with lids if you have them. A standard banker’s box of paper weighs about 30 pounds, and lidded boxes stack flat in a trunk without spilling on the I-93 on-ramp. Paper grocery bags work for loose mail, but double them and fold the tops. Plastic trash bags tear when they are lifted.

  • Load the car the night before so the morning is just a drive
  • Put the heaviest boxes on the floor of the trunk, lighter ones on top
  • Tape any box that is overfull so the lid stays on
  • Keep a separate bag for media so it does not end up on the paper scale
  • Leave the keep pile at home, clearly marked, so nothing goes south by mistake

If you want the full prep list, see our guide on how to prepare documents for shredding. It applies to every drop-off, wherever you drive in from.

Plan a one-trip purge from Manchester

Here is the part most people miss. The $34.90 per-job fees are charged every time you come in, and the flat box rate only starts at 10 boxes. So splitting a big purge into several small trips costs you twice. You pay the fees on every trip, and each small trip falls back to the per-pound price.

Take a Manchester household or small office with 12 banker’s boxes to shred. The chart compares bringing all 12 at once with splitting them into two or three trips. The gold bars add the cost of driving, using the IRS business standard mileage rate of 76 cents a mile for the second half of 2026 on a round trip of about 70 miles.

Cost of shredding 12 banker’s boxes from Manchester in one, two or three drop-off trips 12 banker’s boxes from Manchester: one trip vs splitting it up $0 $200 $400 $600 $274.90 $328.10 1 trip of 12 $426.20 $532.60 2 trips of 6 $461.10 $620.70 3 trips of 4 Shredding + $34.90 per trip Plus about 70 miles per trip at 76¢
Twelve banker’s boxes at about 30 lb each. One trip of 12 uses the $20 large-box rate. Trips of 6 or 4 boxes are priced at 99¢ per pound. Every trip adds $34.90 in per-job fees. Mileage is about 70 miles per round trip at the IRS business rate of 76¢ a mile.

One trip with all 12 boxes comes to $274.90 at the counter. Two trips of six cost $426.20, and three trips of four cost $461.10, before you count a single mile. Add the driving and the gap grows to almost $300 between one trip and three. The paper is the same paper.

Banker’s boxes in one tripShreddingDrop-off totalIf we picked up in Manchester
1 box (about 30 lb)$29.70$64.60$224.55
5 boxes (about 150 lb)$148.50$183.40$343.35
9 boxes (about 270 lb)$267.30$302.20$462.15
10 large boxes$200.00$234.90$394.85
20 large boxes$400.00$434.90$594.85

Look at the nine and ten box rows. Nine boxes by the pound cost more than ten boxes at the flat rate. If your count lands at seven, eight or nine, fill one more box before you load the car. The pickup column uses the $159.95 Zone 2 fee for Manchester, and our full shredding rates page lists every number.

Counter rule of thumb: one trip, ten boxes or more, lids on. That single habit saves Manchester customers more than any route trick on I-93.

A weekend sort, a weekday drive

A one-trip purge needs one thing before it needs a car: a sort. Shred what you no longer need, keep what you still do, and recycle the rest at home in Manchester. Weekends are good for the sort because our counter is weekday only, so the drive goes on the following Tuesday or Wednesday.

  1. Saturday morning: pull everything out. File drawers, the closet shelf, the boxes in the basement. Work at a big table and make three piles: keep, shred and recycle. Catalogs and plain envelopes go straight to recycling, so you are not paying to shred them.
  2. Saturday afternoon: check the keep pile. The IRS says to keep most tax records for 3 years, 6 years if you left out more than 25 percent of your income, 7 years for a bad debt or worthless securities claim, and records tied to property until the period runs out for the year you sell it.
  3. Sunday: box the shred pile. Banker’s boxes with lids, about 30 pounds each when full. Count them. If you are at seven, eight or nine, make it ten.
  4. Sunday night: load the car. Heavy boxes low, media in its own bag, keep pile left in the house. Put the address 1215 Main Street, Tewksbury, MA 01876 in your phone.
  5. Tuesday or Wednesday morning: drive. Leave between about 9:15 and 11. I-93 South, I-495 South, exit 94 or 92. Park out front, unload with our help, pay, take your certificate and head home before the afternoon rush.

That is the whole purge, one trip and one set of fees. If you want to make it a habit rather than a once-a-decade event, our article on the annual document purge shows how to keep each year’s pile small. Our document retention guide has the longer keep-or-shred list by record type.

Households with a parent’s papers, or a house in the North End being emptied, often find the sort takes more than one weekend. That is fine. Keep the shred boxes sealed in one spot and make the drive once the count is final. For Manchester-specific household advice, including apartment buildings and tax time, read our page on residential shredding in Manchester NH.

Bringing records for a business or an estate

Not every Manchester to Tewksbury drop-off is a household clearing out old statements. Office managers, executors and small landlords make the same drive with records that someone may later ask about. A little paperwork on your side turns a quick drop-off into a clean record.

For a business

Tell us the business name for the certificate before the boxes go on the scale. Keep a short list of what was in the boxes, by department or year, and file it with the Certificate of Destruction. If anyone ever asks when a year of payroll or client files was destroyed, you have the date, the weight and the list in one folder.

Landlords and property managers who pull tenant credit reports should know the FTC Disposal Rule, 16 CFR Part 682. It names burning, pulverizing or shredding paper so it cannot be read or reconstructed.

For an estate

Executors often drive down with a parent’s papers from a house that is being sold. Put the estate name on the certificate and keep it with the estate file. Check with the estate’s attorney before anything goes in a box, and keep the last few years of tax returns and anything tied to the sale of the house.

Our page on estate and downsizing shredding has a sorting order that keeps the job to a weekend or two.

Medical and dental offices that need a Business Associate Agreement can ask for one before the drive. It is available on request for HIPAA covered entities and business associates, and the same certificate comes with every job.

When the drive stops making sense

The drive is worth it most of the time. A round trip of about 70 miles costs about $53.20 at the IRS business rate, plus around two hours of your morning. A pickup from Manchester costs a $159.95 Zone 2 fee on top of the same shredding rates. For a few boxes, the drive wins clearly.

It stops making sense when the boxes outgrow the car, when the person who would drive cannot lift them, or when the boxes are up a flight of stairs with no elevator. It also stops making sense for an office whose staff time is worth more than $159.95 for the morning. In those cases, book our off-site shredding pickup and we load the boxes and shred them at our office after they arrive.

Free community shred days do turn up around Manchester, usually hosted by banks, credit unions or community groups with box limits and short hours. They are a good deal when the date fits. Our page on free shredding in Manchester NH explains what to expect from them.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Manchester to your Tewksbury office?

From Manchester City Hall it is about 35 miles, and our November 2026 routing check put it at roughly 50 minutes with light traffic. Most of it is I-93 South. Weekday morning and late afternoon commutes can add a good deal of time, so leave between about 9:15 and 11 a.m. if you can.

Do I need an appointment for a Manchester to Tewksbury drop-off?

No. Walk-in drop-off runs Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with no appointment and no account. Park out front, tell us you have boxes, and we help you unload. Only witnessed sessions and pickups need to be booked ahead.

Which exit do I take off I-495?

Coming from I-93, take I-495 South toward Lowell. Exit 94 for Route 133 and North Street brings you down to Main Street close to our door. Exit 92 for Route 38 is simpler, with about 2.6 miles on Main Street. Both end at 1215 Main Street, Unit 115.

Is parking free?

Yes. Parking is free, right in front of the building, and staff help you unload boxes onto a cart. You do not need to carry heavy boxes inside yourself. Tell whoever greets you how many boxes are in the car.

How much will a carload from Manchester cost?

It depends on the count. One banker’s box of about 30 pounds comes to about $64.60 with the $34.90 per-job fees. Five boxes are about $183.40. Ten large boxes are $234.90 and twenty are $434.90, because the flat $20 box rate starts at 10 boxes.

Why bring everything in one trip?

The $34.90 per-job fees apply every time you come in, and the flat box rate starts at 10 boxes. Twelve boxes in one trip cost $274.90. The same twelve in two trips of six cost $426.20 before you count gas and time. One trip is almost always cheaper.

Do I have to take out staples and paper clips?

No. Staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands and file folders can stay in. Remove three-ring binder hardware, hanging-folder frames and anything that is not paper. Bring hard drives, phones or discs in a separate bag for a per-item quote.

When is my paper shredded?

Paper you drop off at our counter is shredded the same business day at our Tewksbury office. You leave with a Certificate of Destruction. All of the shredded paper is recycled.

Can I drop off business records on my way to work?

Yes. Many customers who commute toward Andover, Lowell or Boston load the trunk the night before and stop in after 10 a.m. or on the way home before 5 p.m. Tell us the business name for the certificate. Paper is shredded the same business day and the certificate records the job.
