Quick answer

For Rindge NH home shredding, make it one trip a year. Keep a shred box at home all year, sort it once after tax season, and drive the boxes about 49 miles to New Hampshire Document Shredding at 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, Tewksbury, MA, open weekdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Our residential shredding costs 99 cents a pound plus $34.90 in fees per trip, so four banker’s boxes cost about $153.70 in one trip but about $258.40 spread over four.

Why Rindge NH home shredding works best as one trip a year

Rindge is a long way from our counter. From Town Hall on Payson Hill Road it is about 49 miles to Tewksbury, and in normal traffic that is roughly 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes each way. Nobody in Rindge should be making that drive with one shoebox of bank statements.

The price works the same way. Every visit carries two fixed fees, $14.95 for the HIPAA filing that produces your Certificate of Destruction and $19.95 for recycling the shred. That $34.90 is charged per job, not per box. Make four trips a year and you pay it four times. Make one and you pay it once.

So the plan for a Rindge household is simple. Let the paper pile up in one safe place, sort it once, and bring it all down in a single run. You save three sets of fees, three half-day drives and three rounds of gas.

Yearly cost for a Rindge household shredding 4 or 8 banker’s boxes a year in four trips, two trips or one trip Same paper, different number of trips: yearly total at the counter $0 $100 $200 $300 $400 $258.40 $188.60 $153.70 4 boxes a year $377.20 $307.40 $272.50 8 boxes a year Four trips Two trips One trip
Yearly totals at our Tewksbury counter for banker’s boxes at about 30 lb each, priced at 99¢ per pound, with $34.90 in per-job fees charged on every trip. Four boxes: $258.40 in four trips, $188.60 in two, $153.70 in one.

The chart uses our rates and the usual weight of a banker’s box, about 30 pounds. A household that fills four boxes a year pays about $258.40 if it drives one box down each season, about $188.60 in two trips, and about $153.70 in one. At eight boxes a year, one trip saves you $104.70 over four trips. And that is before you count the roughly 300 extra miles of driving three more round trips would add.

There is one more reason to batch. A single box tempts you to toss things in the recycling instead. A planned yearly trip gives every sensitive page somewhere to go, so nothing with your account number ends up in a bin at the transfer station.

Cost per trip for Rindge NH home shredding, one to ten boxes

Here is what one trip costs, depending on how much you bring. Under ten boxes we charge by the pound. At ten or more, the flat box rate kicks in at $20 per large banker’s box and $15 per small box. The fees are the same $34.90 either way. Every number matches our shredding rates page.

Boxes in one tripAbout how much paperShredding chargeTotal with $34.90 feesCost per box
130 lb$29.70$64.60$64.60
260 lb$59.40$94.30$47.15
390 lb$89.10$124.00$41.33
4120 lb$118.80$153.70$38.43
5150 lb$148.50$183.40$36.68
6180 lb$178.20$213.10$35.52
8240 lb$237.60$272.50$34.06
10box rate$200.00$234.90$23.49

Two things jump out. The cost per box keeps falling as the trip gets bigger, because the $34.90 is spread over more paper. And there is a cliff at ten boxes. Ten boxes at the flat rate cost less than eight or nine by the pound.

Counter tip for Rindge: if your yearly purge comes to eight or nine boxes, go back to the closet for one more. Nine boxes by the pound run about $302.20 with fees. Ten boxes at the box rate are $234.90. The tenth box makes the whole trip about $67 cheaper.

All of these are estimates. The scale at the counter sets the final number, and a box of dense file folders can weigh more than 30 pounds while a box of loose junk mail weighs less. If you want to estimate before you load the car, our guide to how much paper a household shreds shows how to work out pounds and boxes from what is in your closet.

Notice what is missing from the table. There is no charge for walking in, no account to open and no contract. You pay for one visit and you are done until next year.

The Rindge annual purge plan, month by month

The plan has two moving parts. A shred box that collects paper all year, and one purge day when you sort the files that have aged out. Here is how they fit around the calendar most New Hampshire households already live by.

Yearly cycle: shred box all year, hold tax papers until you file, purge day at home, one weekday trip to Tewksbury, file the certificate One year of household paper, one trip Shred box by the desk all year Tax season hold every tax paper Purge day after filing, sort at home One drive weekday, 10 to 5 File the certificate The empty boxes go back by the desk and the cycle starts again About 49 miles each way, one set of $34.90 fees a year
The yearly cycle we suggest to Rindge households: collect all year, sort once after filing taxes, make one weekday trip to Tewksbury, keep the certificate.
WhenWhat to doWhy then
All yearDrop sensitive mail, receipts and statements in the shred boxNothing with an account number goes in the recycling
January to AprilHold W-2s, 1099s, mortgage and property tax statementsYou need them to file
After you filePull the tax year that just passed the 3-year mark and add it to the shred pileMost returns can be shredded after 3 years
Late springPurge day: sort the shred box and the old year, count the boxesOne sitting, while the tax rules are fresh in your head
A clear weekday soon afterDrive to Tewksbury, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.Good roads, light traffic, one set of fees
Same dayFile the Certificate of Destruction with your tax papersProof of when and how the paper was destroyed

You can move the purge to any season that suits you. Some households like the fall, after the summer rush and before the snow. Others prefer to tie it to tax season so they only think about old paper once. The point is to pick a date and keep it every year.

  1. Set up the shred box. Put an empty banker’s box with a lid by wherever the mail lands. Anything with your name plus an account number, a Social Security number, a signature or a medical detail goes in it. Junk mail with nothing personal can go in the recycling.
  2. Pull the aged-out files. On purge day, go to the filing cabinet and pull the tax year that has passed its keep date, plus the bank and card statements you have reconciled.
  3. Sort into keep and shred. Work at the kitchen table with two boxes. If you are unsure about a page, keep it for another year. It costs nothing to wait.
  4. Pack for the car. Leave staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands and file folders in. Take out three-ring binder rings, hanging-folder frames and anything that is not paper. Close every lid.
  5. Count and round up. Count the boxes. At eight or nine, fill a tenth from the closet to get the box rate. Then pick a clear weekday for the drive.

What belongs in the shred box day to day? Use this as a quick guide.

  • Bank, credit card and brokerage statements once you have checked them
  • Explanation of benefits letters and pharmacy receipts with your name on them
  • Pre-approved credit offers and convenience checks
  • Pay stubs and benefit statements after you match them to the year-end forms
  • Anything showing a Social Security number, account number, signature or birth date

What a Rindge household keeps and what goes in the box

Purge day only works if you know what is safe to shred. For tax records, the IRS gives clear periods. For most other household paper, the rule is to keep what you still need and shred the rest once it has done its job.

RecordKeep itThen

Property records are the exception most people forget. Keep anything that proves what you paid for your house and its improvements until the IRS periods have run after you sell. That can mean decades for a family that has owned the same Rindge property for a long time.

Our NH tax document retention guide goes year by year. If the bank statements are the bulk of your pile, read should I shred old bank statements before purge day. And when you are deciding which envelopes from the mailbox belong in the shred box, our list of what junk mail you should shred is a quick reference.

A sample year for a two-person Rindge household

Here is how the plan plays out for a typical retired couple. This is an illustration built from our rates, not a real customer, and the mix of paper is a common one for a household that keeps good files.

From May to the following April, the shred box by the desk fills with bank and card statements once they are checked, pharmacy receipts, explanation of benefits letters, pre-approved credit offers and the odd envelope with an account number on it. By spring that is about one and a half banker’s boxes.

After they file their return, they pull the tax year that is now more than three years old. With the return, the W-2s, the 1099s and the receipts behind it, that is another box. They also clear a drawer of old utility bills and expired insurance policies, which fills one more box.

What went into the boxesAbout how much
A year of sensitive mail and statements from the shred box1.5 boxes
The tax year past its 3-year keep date1 box
Old bills and expired policies1 box
Total for the tripAbout 4 boxes, roughly 120 pounds

At 99 cents a pound, 120 pounds is about $118.80. Add the $34.90 per-job fees and the year’s shredding comes to about $153.70, a little under $13 a month. They make one weekday drive in late spring, leave with the certificate, and put it in the folder with the tax return they just filed.

Compare that with driving one box down every season. Same paper, about $104.70 more in fees and three more long round trips. That is the whole argument for the yearly plan in one example.

Making the one trip from Rindge count

The usual way down is Route 119 east from Rindge through the small towns across the Massachusetts line, then I-495 north to Route 38 and our door at 1215 Main Street. Plan on about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes each way. Our main page on document shredding in Rindge NH has the full route and a map.

Leave Rindge in the morning and you reach us after we open at 10 a.m. and before the afternoon commute builds on I-495. Our walk-in hours are weekdays only, with no Saturday hours, so pick a day you can take a few hours for the round trip.

Many Rindge households fold the trip into another errand south of the line. It is your call. Just keep the boxes in a locked car if you stop, and come to us first so the paper is not riding around all day.

Lids on, boxes counted, ready for the run south.

Before you leave

Count the boxes and close every lid. Put old phones, hard drives or discs in a separate bag. They are physically destroyed and quoted per item, not by the pound.

At the counter

Staff help you unload. We weigh the paper, or count boxes at ten or more, and you see the total before you pay. Read how drop-off shredding works step by step.

On the way home

Your paper is shredded at our office that same business day. You leave with the certificate. File it with your tax papers and the job is done for the year.

If a weekday drive is impossible, call us at (978) 636-0301 before you load up. Rindge sits outside our standard pickup zone list, so a pickup is quoted for your address and the zone is confirmed when you book. Our page on shredding near Rindge NH compares the drive with a pickup quote for larger loads.

What Rindge rules mean for your household paper

Two town and state rules shape what a Rindge household can do with old paperwork at home. Neither is about shredding directly, but both explain why the shred box exists.

No burning household trash

New Hampshire has banned burning household trash since January 1, 2003. The state notice, posted on the Rindge Fire Department page, says a burn barrel, fireplace or woodstove does not get hot enough to destroy the toxins in inks and coated paper.

Transfer station sticker

Rindge sells transfer station stickers at the Town Clerk’s or Selectmen’s office at 30 Payson Hill Road, not at the transfer station. For April 2026 to April 2027 the town lists $50 for a regular sticker and $25 for a senior sticker.

Recycling is not shredding

Paper recycling is for newspapers and cereal boxes. A statement in the recycling pile is still readable when it leaves your hands. Anything with an account number belongs in the shred box.

Home shredders are slow

A desk shredder is fine for a few envelopes a week. For a year of files it overheats, jams on staples and fills a bag in minutes. Purge day is the job a counter shredder is built for.

Some people see the woodstove as the old country answer to old paper. The state says no for household trash, and half-burned pages with names on them can lift out of a chimney. Our post on burning your old documents covers why.

The transfer station is the right place for your recycling and your trash. It is not built to destroy what is printed on your paper. Keep the two streams separate and the plan stays simple.

Estates, moves and the once-in-a-decade purge

Some years are not ordinary. Clearing a parent’s house, downsizing before a move, or finally emptying a filing cabinet that has been full since the 1990s can produce twenty or thirty boxes at once. The yearly plan still applies. It just gets one very large trip.

For an estate, start by finding what the executor needs to keep: the final returns, records that support the estate’s accounting, and anything a lawyer asks you to hold. Everything else from the house can be boxed for shredding. Our guide to shredding after a death in NH walks through the order.

On a big load, the box rate matters most. Twenty banker’s boxes cost $400 at the flat rate plus $34.90 in fees, or $434.90 in one trip. A full pickup truck from Rindge is a long drive, but it is still one set of fees for the whole house.

If the boxes are more than one car can carry, or nobody in the family can lift them, ask us for a pickup quote for your Rindge address. We confirm the zone when you book, and a handling fee applies for stairs or restricted access, quoted up front. Pickup always needs an appointment, and we never promise to come the day you call.

When it is all done, the certificate is the record. Keep it with the estate papers or your own files, and the next year’s purge goes back to being one or two boxes.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Rindge NH home shredding cost for one trip?

It depends on how much you bring. One banker’s box of about 30 pounds costs about $64.60 with the $34.90 per-job fees. Four boxes cost about $153.70, and ten boxes cost $234.90 at the $20 box rate. The fees are charged once per trip, so a bigger single trip costs less per box.

How far is your office from Rindge?

From Rindge Town Hall on Payson Hill Road it is about 49 miles to 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, Tewksbury, MA. Most people take Route 119 east, then I-495 north to Route 38. Plan on roughly 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes each way, depending on traffic.

Why only one trip a year?

Every visit carries $34.90 in fees, no matter how many boxes you bring. A household with four boxes a year pays about $258.40 in four trips and about $153.70 in one. One trip also saves you three long drives from Rindge. Keep a shred box at home and bring it all down once.

When should a Rindge household do its yearly purge?

Right after you file your taxes works well for most people. You have the tax paperwork in front of you, and the IRS keep periods are fresh in your head. Some households prefer the fall, before the snow. Any season works if you keep the same date each year.

Can I just burn old papers in my woodstove in Rindge?

New Hampshire has banned burning household trash since January 1, 2003. The state notice posted by the Rindge Fire Department says a burn barrel, fireplace or woodstove does not get hot enough to destroy the toxins in inks and coated paper. Shredding is the safer way to destroy personal paperwork.

Do I need an appointment to drop off?

No. Walk-in drop-off needs no appointment. Come in Monday to Friday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. We weigh the paper, you pay, and it is shredded at our office the same business day. There are no Saturday walk-in hours, so plan the drive from Rindge on a weekday.

Do I have to take out staples and file folders?

You don’t. Leave staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands and file folders in. Please remove three-ring binder hardware, hanging-folder frames and anything that is not paper. Put old phones, hard drives and discs in a separate bag. Those are physically destroyed and quoted per item.

Can you pick up from my home in Rindge?

We can quote it. Rindge is outside our standard zone list, so the zone and transportation fee are confirmed when you book. Pickup needs an appointment, and a handling fee applies for stairs or restricted access. For a few boxes, the yearly drive is almost always cheaper. Call (978) 636-0301 for a quote.

What should go in the shred box during the year?

Anything with your name plus an account number, Social Security number, signature, birth date or medical detail. That means checked bank and card statements, explanation of benefits letters, pharmacy receipts, pre-approved credit offers and old pay stubs. Plain junk mail with nothing personal on it can go in the recycling instead.
