Quick answer
The Plaistow to Tewksbury drop-off is about 21 miles: Route 125 south into Haverhill, I-495 south at Exit 109, then off at Exit 94 (Route 133) or Exit 92 (Route 38) to 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, Tewksbury, MA. Without heavy traffic it takes about 30 to 40 minutes. New Hampshire Document Shredding takes walk-ins Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., for drop-off shredding at 99 cents a pound plus $34.90 in per-job fees, so one banker’s box comes to about $64.60.
The Plaistow to Tewksbury drop-off route, turn by turn
Plaistow has one of the easiest runs to our office of any New Hampshire town. You never touch I-93, you skip the Salem traffic, and the state line is a couple of minutes from Town Hall. Most of the trip is a straight run on I-495 through Haverhill, Methuen, Lawrence and Andover.
We measured from Plaistow Town Hall at 145 Main Street to our door at 1215 Main Street in Tewksbury. Starting from the Route 125 plazas near the state line takes a few minutes off. Starting up near the Kingston line adds a few.
- Head for Route 125 south. From Town Hall on Main Street, it is a short run to Route 125, the commercial strip most of Plaistow already drives every week. Turn south toward Haverhill. The Massachusetts line comes up within about two miles.
- Pick up I-495 South in Haverhill. Route 125 becomes Main Street once you cross into Haverhill. In well under a mile you reach the I-495 interchange, Exit 109. Follow the signs for I-495 South toward Lawrence and Lowell.
- Ride I-495 about 14 miles. You pass Methuen and Lawrence, then the big I-93 interchange in Andover. Keep to I-495 South, ignore the I-93 ramps, and the Tewksbury exits come up soon after.
- Exit at 94 for Route 133. Take Exit 94, signed Route 133, Tewksbury and Andover. Map apps then send you down North Street for a little over two miles until it ends at Main Street, which is Route 38. Turn left and our building is a short way along.
- Or stay on for Exit 92. If you would rather keep it simple, ride two more exits to Exit 92 for Route 38 and follow Main Street toward Tewksbury Center for just under three miles. It adds about two miles and a few minutes.
- Park out front and walk in. Parking is free and right by the door. Tell whoever is at the counter you have boxes, and we will bring a cart and help unload.
Coming from somewhere other than Town Hall changes the first few minutes only. From the side streets off Main Street, most people reach Route 125 within a few minutes and turn south. From Kingston, Atkinson or Newton, Route 125 or the back roads bring you to the same Haverhill interchange. Once you are on I-495 South, everyone shares the same 14 miles.
One habit we suggest: set your map app to 1215 Main Street, Tewksbury, MA 01876 before you pull out, not just “Tewksbury”. There is more than one Main Street in the Merrimack Valley, and the town center of Tewksbury is a couple of miles from us.
Two notes on the exit numbers. Massachusetts renumbered its interstate exits by mileage a few years back, so older directions may still say Exit 51 for Haverhill and Exit 39 for Route 133. They are the same ramps. If your GPS speaks the old numbers, it is fine to trust the road signs.
When to leave Plaistow so the drive stays short
The distance never changes. The time does. I-495 between Haverhill and Andover carries a lot of commuter traffic in both directions, and the stretch near the I-93 interchange in Andover is where a quick trip slows down first. Our hours help here, because we open after the morning rush.
We are open for walk-in drop-off Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are no Saturday hours. That rules out the weekend run, so the trick is to pick the quietest weekday window that still gets you to the counter with time to spare before we close.
| Leave Plaistow | What to expect | Our take |
|---|---|---|
| Just before 10 a.m. | Morning commute mostly over. Arrive close to opening | Good window. You are near the front of the day |
| 10:00 a.m. to noon | Usually the lightest stretch on I-495 | Best window for a large load |
| Noon to 2:00 p.m. | Lunch traffic on Route 125 in Plaistow and Haverhill | Fine, allow a few extra minutes on the strip |
| 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. | Traffic starts to build toward the afternoon commute | Still workable for a few boxes |
| After 3:30 p.m. | Afternoon commute on I-495 and around Andover | Risky. Call ahead if you are cutting it close to 5 |
Those windows come from what we see at our own counter, not from a traffic study. A late-morning run is the one we recommend to Plaistow customers almost every time. You get to us on an open road, we weigh and shred while you wait if you like, and you are back across the state line before the school buses are out.
Running late? Call (978) 636-0301 from the road before you get on I-495. If you are going to arrive right at closing with twenty boxes, we would rather know now and suggest a better day than have you sit in Andover traffic for nothing.
Here is what a typical late-morning run looks like for a Plaistow customer with six boxes. Leave the driveway around 10:15. Reach the Haverhill ramp a few minutes later, and pull into our lot around 10:50. Spend a short while unloading and paying about $213.10 for roughly 180 pounds with fees, and be back on Route 125 well before lunch is over. The whole errand fits in a long coffee break.
Snow changes everything, of course. On a storm day the Merrimack Valley stretch of I-495 can be slow for hours, and there is no reason to fight it with paper that has waited years already. The boxes keep. Pick the next clear weekday.
What a Plaistow to Tewksbury drop-off costs once you arrive
At the counter, a Plaistow customer pays the same rates as anyone else. There is no New Hampshire surcharge and no fee for walking in. You pay for weight, or a flat box rate once you bring ten or more, plus two per-job fees. All of it is on our shredding rates page.
| What you bring | How we price it | Estimated total with fees |
|---|---|---|
| 1 banker’s box (about 30 lb) | 99¢ per pound, about $29.70 | About $64.60 |
| 3 banker’s boxes (about 90 lb) | 99¢ per pound, about $89.10 | About $124.00 |
| 5 banker’s boxes (about 150 lb) | 99¢ per pound, about $148.50 | About $183.40 |
| 10 banker’s boxes | $20 per large box, $200 | $234.90 |
| 20 banker’s boxes | $20 per large box, $400 | $434.90 |
| Per-job fees on every visit | HIPAA filing $14.95 plus environmental $19.95 | $34.90 |
The $34.90 is per job, not per box. That is why one well-packed trip beats three small ones. If you drive down with a single box in March, another in June and another in October, you pay the fees three times. Bring all three together and you pay them once.
This chart puts the drive next to the alternative. Plaistow is in our Zone 1 for pickup, so having us collect the same boxes adds a $129.95 transportation fee to each total. On one box that roughly triples the bill. On twenty boxes it adds about 30 percent. Somewhere in between, your time starts to be worth more than the fee, and we cover that further down.
Counter tip: eight or nine boxes? Find a tenth. Nine banker’s boxes by the pound run about $267.30 before fees. Ten boxes at the $20 box rate are $200 flat. The extra box rides along at no cost and the trip gets about $67 cheaper.
Small boxes count too. Once you reach ten boxes in total, small boxes are $15 each and large banker’s boxes are $20. Loose paper in bags is weighed. If you are not sure which rate applies to a mixed load, ask at the counter before we start.
The trip at a glance
Four numbers to keep in your head when you plan the run from Plaistow. The distance is our measurement from Town Hall. The prices are the ones on our rate sheet.
- Walk-in drop-off Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. No appointment needed
- Paper you drop off is shredded at our Tewksbury office the same business day
- Cross-cut shredding, with every bit of the shred recycled
- A Certificate of Destruction with every job
- No contract and no account. Pay for what you bring
What happens when you reach the counter
The visit is quick. Pull up out front, come in, and tell us how many boxes or bags you have. Someone comes out with a cart. We weigh everything at the counter, or count boxes if you have ten or more, and you see the number before you pay.
Once you have paid, the paper goes into locked handling and is shredded here at the office that same business day. You can head home right away. If you need to see the paper go through the shredder every time, book witnessed shredding instead, at $1.99 a pound with a $100 minimum plus the $34.90 fees.
Before you head back to Plaistow, you get your receipt. The certificate of destruction records the date and the amount destroyed. Keep it with your tax files or your office retention log.
A car load is a short stop. A pickup truck bed of boxes takes a little longer because we count and stack them. Either way, nobody asks you to sort anything on the spot.
There is no account to open and no contract to sign. Offices that want a Business Associate Agreement under HIPAA should ask for it before the first visit so the paperwork is ready when the boxes arrive. We sign one on request for covered entities and business associates.
Packing the car for the run down Route 125
Good packing saves time at both ends. A few minutes in your garage in Plaistow means a faster stop in Tewksbury and no paper blowing around the back seat on I-495.
Use boxes with lids
Banker’s boxes with lids stack well and stay shut on the highway. Grocery bags tear and tip. If you use bags, use heavy ones, tie them, and keep them out of the open truck bed.
Leave the staples in
You do not need to pull staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands or file folders. Our shredder takes them. That alone saves most people an evening.
Pull the hardware
Take out three-ring binder rings, hanging-folder metal frames and anything that is not paper. Those slow the shredder and come back to you at the counter.
Bag media separately
Old hard drives, phones, USB sticks and discs go in their own bag. They are physically destroyed and quoted per item. See our hard drive destruction page.
Fill each box, not overfill
A banker’s box packed to the lid weighs about 30 pounds. Packed past the lid it is hard to lift and the lid will not close. Two moderate boxes beat one bulging one.
Count before you leave
Know your box count before you pull out of the driveway. If you are at eight or nine, that is the moment to fill one more and get the ten-box rate.
Wet or moldy paper is a different case. If boxes sat in a damp basement, bag them in plastic so they do not leak in your car, and tell us when you arrive. Our guide on how to prepare documents for shredding has the full checklist, including what to do about photos and plastic covers.
Think about who lifts. A banker’s box at about 30 pounds is easy for one person to carry from a car, but ten of them in a row add up. If the person making the drive cannot lift, that is fine. Tell us at the door and our staff will unload for you.
Lock the car if you stop on the way. Boxes of tax returns sitting on a back seat in a Haverhill plaza lot are exactly what you are trying to protect. Better to come straight down and make other errands on the way home.
Drive it yourself or book a Zone 1 pickup
Plaistow sits in Zone 1, our closest pickup zone, with a $129.95 transportation fee. That makes pickup more reasonable from Plaistow than from most of New Hampshire. It still only makes sense when the load is big, heavy, or stuck somewhere you cannot easily carry it from.
| Your situation | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 5 boxes, you have a car | Drive to Tewksbury | About $64.60 to $183.40. Pickup would add $129.95 |
| 6 to 9 boxes | Drive, and round up to 10 | Ten boxes at $20 each cost less than nine by the pound |
| 10 to 25 boxes, someone free on a weekday | Drive to Tewksbury | $234.90 for ten, $434.90 for twenty. One late-morning trip |
| 25 or more boxes, or no one to lift them | Zone 1 pickup | $129.95 is small next to a staff day and two or three loaded trips |
| Boxes up a flight of stairs with no elevator | Pickup, ask for the handling fee | A handling fee applies for stairs or restricted access, quoted when you book |
| Files you must see destroyed | Witnessed session | $1.99 per pound, $100 minimum, certificate signed in front of you |
Our short version for Plaistow: for three boxes, drive. For thirty, book the pickup. Pickup always needs an appointment and we never promise to come the day you call, so book ahead. The full process is on our off-site shredding page.
Businesses along the Route 125 corridor have their own page. What Plaistow customers usually bring down, and what to keep
Most of the Plaistow drop-offs we see fall into a few groups. Households clearing old tax years. Families emptying a parent’s house. Small offices on Route 125 doing a once-a-year clean-out of closed files. Each one has a simple rule about what can go.
For tax paperwork, the IRS says to keep records for 3 years in most cases. It is 6 years if you left out income worth more than 25 percent of the gross income on the return, and 7 years if you claimed a loss from worthless securities or a bad debt deduction. Employment tax records are kept at least 4 years after the tax is due or paid.
Anything past those dates, along with bank and card statements you have reconciled, old pay stubs and expired insurance paperwork, is a good candidate for the trip. Our document retention guide lists household and business records side by side with official sources.
Plaistow’s curbside trash and recycling is collected by Republic Services, and the town asks for toters at the curb by 7 a.m. That system handles junk mail and cereal boxes well. It is not built for paper with your Social Security number on it, which rides in an open cart and an open truck before anyone sorts it.
Landlords and small businesses have one more rule to know. If you pulled a credit report on a tenant or customer, the FTC’s Disposal Rule (16 CFR Part 682) expects you to dispose of it by burning, pulverizing or shredding. Bringing those files down to our counter and keeping the certificate is the easy way to show you did.
Neighbors in Hampstead and Salem often ask about their own routes. Hampstead customers can follow the same Route 125 path or cut across on Route 121A, and our page on shredding service in Hampstead NH covers it. Salem has its own I-93 run in our Salem NH to Tewksbury drop-off guide. Every town we cover is listed on our service areas page.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Plaistow to your Tewksbury office?
From Plaistow Town Hall at 145 Main Street it is about 21 miles to 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, Tewksbury. Take Route 125 south into Haverhill, I-495 South at Exit 109, then Exit 94 for Route 133 and North Street to Route 38. In light traffic it takes about 30 to 40 minutes each way.
Do I need an appointment for a Plaistow to Tewksbury drop-off?
No. Walk-in drop-off needs no appointment. Come in any weekday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. We weigh your boxes at the counter, you pay, and the paper is shredded at our office the same business day. Witnessed sessions and pickups are the services that need a booking.
What is the best time to leave Plaistow?
Late morning, roughly 10 a.m. to noon, is usually the easiest. The morning commute on I-495 has cleared and we are open. Avoid leaving after about 3:30 p.m., when the afternoon commute builds around Andover and you risk reaching us close to our 5 p.m. closing time.
How much will it cost to drop off five boxes from Plaistow?
Five banker’s boxes weigh about 150 pounds. At 99 cents a pound that is about $148.50, plus $34.90 in per-job fees, for about $183.40. The scale sets the final number. If we picked the same five boxes up in Plaistow, the Zone 1 fee of $129.95 would bring it to about $313.35.
Is there a shredding drop-off in Plaistow itself?
Not from us. We shred at one place only, our office at 1215 Main Street, Unit 115, Tewksbury, MA. We have no office, kiosk or drop box in Plaistow or anywhere in New Hampshire. Plaistow customers drive the 21 miles down or book a Zone 1 pickup.
Can I drop off on a Saturday?
No. Walk-in drop-off is Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. If a weekday is impossible, call (978) 636-0301. Witnessed sessions and pickups outside regular hours can sometimes be arranged by appointment, but walk-in drop-off is weekdays only.
Do I have to remove staples and folders before I drive down?
You don’t have to. Leave staples, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands and file folders in. Please remove three-ring binder hardware, hanging-folder frames and anything that is not paper. Put hard drives, phones or discs in a separate bag. Those are physically destroyed and quoted per item.
Why does my GPS say Exit 51 or Exit 39?
Those are the old Massachusetts exit numbers. The state renumbered I-495 exits by mileage. Old Exit 51 in Haverhill is now Exit 109, and old Exit 39 for Route 133 is now Exit 94. Old Exit 38 for Route 38 is now Exit 92. The ramps did not move.
Can you pick up from Plaistow instead of me driving?
Yes. Plaistow is in Zone 1, so pickup adds a $129.95 transportation fee to the normal shredding rates and the $34.90 per-job fees. Pickup needs an appointment, and we never promise to come the same day you call. It makes the most sense for big cleanouts or boxes you cannot lift.
